Live blog: Capitals face Braden Holtby for first time in game against Dallas Stars

The Washington Capitals are in The Big D tonight to take on the Dallas Stars. Dallas is retiring Sergei Zubov’s no. 56 before the game.

But the big news heading into tonight’s tilt is that the Capitals are facing Braden Holtby for the first time since the Holtbeast left town in 2020.

“Yes, it’s strange,” Holtby said when asked about the start. “Obviously it’s been a while leading up. Great to get to see some old faces and good friends I haven’t seen a lot in the last year or a half. It’s going to be strange. Very odd tonight. Exciting at the same time to experience something new.”

The Capitals will turn to Vitek Vanecek in net tonight. Watch the game along with us on NBC Sports Washington.

Live blog: Capitals take on Sharks as Ilya Samsonov returns to the net

The Washington Capitals are taking on the San Jose Sharks. The big news out of the morning skate was that Connor McMichael would sit in favor of Daniel Sprong. (And boy, the reaction in our comment section was strong.)

Ilya Samsonov will get the start in net as Vitek Vanecek sits for the first time in four games. The Capitals are wearing their navy blue alternates. Also, it’s Police Night at Capital One Arena.

Live blog: Capitals play Vegas Golden Knights on Caps Canine Night

The Washington Capitals are taking on their foes from the 2018 Stanley Cup Final tonight: the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Capitals are getting John Carlson and Dmitry Orlov back in the lineup but will be without Nick Jensen for a while. Nicklas Backstrom has been reunited with Alex Ovechkin on the first line.

Vitek Vanecek will get his fourth-straight start. Tonight is Caps Canine Night at Capital One Arena.

Live blog: Capitals play Bruins as AJF returns to the lineup

The Washington Capitals are taking on the Boston Bruins tonight for the first time since the B’s beat them 7-3 on home ice last Monday. Axel-Jonsson Fjallby will replace Daniel Sprong on the third line as Peter Laviolette chooses to go with more of a two-way player.

The Capitals will be without Dmitry Orlov (suspension), John Carlson (COVID), TJ Oshie (injury), and Conor Sheary (COVID) for tonight’s game. Anthony Mantha remains on long-term injured reserve.

Vitek Vanecek will make his third start in the last four games as he tries to stake his claim to the Capitals’ top goalie spot.

Tonight’s Caps-Bruins game is streaming only and can be watched on ESPN+.

Live blog: Capitals complete two-game homestand against Jets

The Washington Capitals face the Winnipeg Jets to complete a two-game homestand at Capital One Arena tonight. The Caps’ have lost five of their last six games and fallen to fourth in the Metropolitan Division. Peter Laviolette says there’s “no common thread” in the losses.

Without TJ Oshie in the lineup once again, Laviolette will give first-line duty to Garnet Hathaway, whose penalties the game before contributed to the Capitals’ loss to the Canucks. Vitek Vanecek will start the game in net.

The Capitals are wearing special Willie O’Ree stickers on the back of their helmets. O’Ree is having his number retired by the Bruins tonight.

Live blog: Capitals return home to finish back-to-back against Canucks

The Washington Capitals are taking on the Vancouver Canucks as Washington DC is under a Winter Storm warning due to Winter Storm Izzy. The Capitals are coming off a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders on Saturday.

The Capitals got bad news before puck drop as John Carlson, the team’s best defenseman, was forced to enter COVID-19 protocol.

Bruce Boudreau is making his first stop in DC since being hired as the the Canucks new head coach in early December. The Canucks won their first seven games under Bruce, but have lost their last three recently.

Live blog: Capitals play Bruins as Zach Fucale makes second consecutive start in net

The Washington Capitals will try to end a three-game losing streak tonight against the team that dispersed them rudely from the first round of the 2021 playoffs.

The Capitals will do so without Dmitry Orlov and own-goal scorer Carl Hagelin who both entered COVID protocol today. Zach Fucale will get his first back-to-back start in net of his career.

The game will be the Capitals’ 37th of the year and their third in four nights.

Live blog: Capitals take on Wild as Zach Fucale makes second career start

The Minnesota Wild are devastated by injury and COVID-19 while the Capitals are playing in the back end of a back-to-back tonight. Who will win?

Zach Fucale will draw his second career start with Vitek Vanecek out due to illness while Connor McMichael is back in the lineup and will play on the Capitals second line. Yes, two Connors are playing on the same line as each other and they both spell their first names differently.

Live blog: Capitals play Blues in first game of back-to-back

The Washington Capitals are back on the ice after four days off. Washington is in St. Louis to take on the Blues, who are without their star player, Vladimir Tarasenko, due to COVID protocol.

Meanwhile, the Capitals are missing their own core players as Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie are sidelined and not on the road trip due to the flu.

Live blog: Capitals take on flagging Devils at Capital One Arena

The Washington Capitals are ill and not in a good way.

After getting several defensive reserves back from COVID-19 protocol (Justin Schultz and Nick Jensen), the Capitals learned that Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie would not suit up against the New Jerseys due to a non-COVID illness, meaning Michael Sgarbossa and Daniel Sprong will get back into the lineup. Ilya Samsonov gets the start against MacKenzie Blackwood.

The Capitals, who only have $200k left in cap space, also sent Aliaksei Protas back to Hershey.

The Capitals are fighting for first place in the Metro (tied with Carolina) while the seventh-place Devils are 3-6-1 in their last 10.
