Caps vs Senators Pregame: Rivalry Night From DC

Sleep tight, kids, with visions of sugarplums and evil bun-bun Ovi dancing in your heads.

Wednesday night is rivalry night, according to NBC Sports. This means that two random teams without any meaningful relationship play on a Wednesday and the game is on NBCSN and given the label “rivalry night” without any deliberate thought.

Tonight’s game is not on NBCSN, thank goodness, but it wouldn’t be the most random pair of teams to meet on a rivalry night. The Caps meet the Senators, which means we get to watch one of the best players in the league, Erik Karlsson, and a bunch of other dudes play hockey in their Senators jerseys.

Tonight’s game is on the trust CSN Plus. Puck drops at 7 PM.

Can’t Clinch: Sens Beat Caps 4-3 (OT)

On this festive weekend, the Caps looked to clinch a playoff berth with a regulation win over the Senators. Instead, they dug themselves a huge hole early. Somehow, they came back. Then they blew it again. Oh well. Put down your matzo and wine, it’s no time for a yeast-less party.

Caps at Senators Pregame: Clench for the Clinch

With just one week left in the NHL regular season, the Capitals are sitting comfortably in the Metro standings. With a regulation win over the Ottawa Senators tonight, Washington could guarantee a playoff appearance.

(I am constitutionally and stylistically opposed to the typical clinching idiom. I literally hate it literally.)

Game is at 7 PM on CSN. I’ve got a bunch of family in town, so Chris Gordon will be recapping the game in my stead.

Caps beat Sens 2-1, Ovi Back in Scoring Lead

The clash of the capitals cities got off to a slow start. Twenty minutes in Ottawa came and went before either the Washington Capitals or Ottawa Senators got on the scoreboard, and then in the span of two minutes and two seconds, the game was all but decided.

Holtby earned his 10th and final perfect consecutive regulation period in the first before surrendering one to Kyle Turris in the second– though I’d blame some weak defense for that one. The Caps were unfazed and struck back for two goals– first from Evgeny Kuznetsov and then a wild home-run shot from Alex Ovechkin to put the Caps in the lead and tie Rick Nash for the league’s scoring lead.

The Caps fought off every penalty kill possible in the third and finally got one of their own late to no result. Laich shanked the empty-net chance and it was over.

Caps at Senators Pregame: In The Other Capital City

Bobby Ryan, Erik Karlsson, and some other guys! The Ottawa Senators are competing hard for the team-I-care-about-least award, pulling way ahead of the Stars since the summer and going neck and neck with the Canucks right now.

Tonight at 7:30, on CSN Plus, the Caps will try to extend their amazing one-game winning streak.

Caps beat Sens 2-1, Undefeated in Rego in Last 20 Days

The furious, points-laden month of December continues for the Washington Capitals, who stubbornly refuse to lose. Soundly outplaying the Ottawa Senators on a dreary Monday night, the Caps got a weirdly rare home win in rego.

The first period had a bunch of penalties but no pucks in the net. Jay Beagle summoned the weird superstar part of his skill set to get the Caps on the board first. Before two minutes had passed, Erik Condra nullified the Caps’ lead by ripping off Mike Green and beating Holtby. Papa Nick Backstrom made a great read on the power play to beat Craig Anderson and give the Caps the lead going into the second intermission. Holtby kept the Caps in it in the third.

The Darkest Timeline: Sens beat Caps 2-0, Six Straight Losses

It has been eleven long days since the Capitals won a game. We’ve had like three or four completely different seasons of weather since the last time they added a point to the standings and after a sparsely attended sixty minutes in snowy Washington, D.C., that streak is gonna get even longer. You’ll be planting succulents and buying beach towels before these guys win again.

Skip this paragraph. After a scoreless first, Kyle Turris got past Karl Alzner and beat Holtby to put the Senators up 1-0. Jason Spezza scored a powerplay marker in the third while Erat was in the box.

That’s it. The Ottawa Senators beat the Caps 2-0. A shutout. That’s six straight losses for the Capitals.

Senators beat Caps 3-1 to Close Out 2013

After losing to Buffalo despite dominating play on Sunday, the Capitals hoped to close out 2013 with a road win in Ottawa. Unfortunately, without the whole “goals” part of hockey, wins are hard to come by. Prepositions are easy to end sentences with.

Joel Ward notched his 12th of the year just two minutes in as Craig Anderson deflected his shot (which was going wide) into the Ottawa net. The Sens stuck back with a two-on-one series executed by Mika Zibanejad. In the second, Kyle Turris put the Sens up with a gorgeous goal, shaking off a hook and tricking Grubauer before scoring. The Caps couldn’t beat Anderson in a late-game flurry, and Clarke MacArthur got the empty netter. The Caps have dropped their last game of the year.

Sens beat Caps 3-1. Goodnight, 2013.

Festival of (Red) Lights: Sens Edge Caps 6-4

[Note: This recap is Chanukah-themed tonight. Why? Because there’s literally no one on the Internet right now.]

Last week, there was only one way to describe the play of the Washington Capitals: shameful. After winning three straight, the Capitals allowed seven unanswered goals at Verizon Center, before showing some life late against Montreal. Saturday’s game, though, was markedly different. The Capitals still lost, but they put 50 shots on goal, Washington’s highest total since 2010. On the first night of Chanukah, the Caps looked to continue that output against the lowly Ottawa Senators. They did — at first.

It started with a sublime play by yelling person-cum-Jewish pun Michael Latta, who skated into the offensive zone, got tripped, and then pole vaulted over a Sens defender. The loose puck went to Eric Fehr, who unleashed a lovely wrist shot to put the Caps on the board. Ottawa tied it up less than a minute and a half later, however, when Bobby Ryan tipped one past Braden Holtby on the man-advantage. However, Marcus Johansson whacked in a loose puck in front on the power play just 38 seconds after the Sens tally, giving the Caps a 2-1 lead. BUT WAIT! A mere 47 seconds later, Brooks Laich backhanded home a loose puck in front. Four goals in under five minutes. Whew!

The second period was all Sens. Chris Philips put them within one with a blast on the power play, before Colin Greening tied the game at three.

In the final frame Mika Zibanejad added another PP tally. Ugh. The game looked hopeless until John Carlson tied it late. Prepare to cry, though, because just over a minute later Zach Smith beat Mike Green and Nate Schmidt to win the ballgame. Ryan added an empty netter. Sad face. Vodka. Sens edge Caps 6-4
