Anthony Mantha says he sensed an incoming hat trick from Alex Ovechkin the day before milestone game in Chicago

The answer to the trivia question in fifty years of who exactly got the primary assist on Alex Ovechkin‘s 800th career goal will be Anthony Mantha. The big winger got the first of his two points against the Chicago Blackhawks on the huge milestone tally.

It’s a goal that the Quebec native says he saw coming way before the puck had even dropped on Tuesday night.

So is Anthony Mantha just a bottom-six forward forever now?

On Thursday night the Washington Capitals lost 3-2 to the Seattle Kraken. It was a weird game. The Capitals got pummeled in shot attempts (63-29) but never trailed in the actual game until overtime where they lost in seven seconds.

The player usage was weird as well. Conor Sheary, on ice for 24 Seattle attempts and 10 Washington attempts during five-on-five, played 18:51, a high among forwards. Meanwhile, Anthony Mantha played a team-low of 10:40 (all strengths). During those 15 shifts, the Caps had their best on-ice expected goals percentage (56.8 percent).

Mantha’s low usage comes one game after he made a high-level carry-in and pass to help Alex Ovechkin score his second goal of the night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Anthony Mantha now has more career Gordie Howe hat tricks than Gordie Howe

The Washington Capitals’ 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday was quite the ornery affair. The crowd inside Capital One Arena was treated to two ten-minute misconducts, six fighting majors, four roughing penalties, and an ejection.

It was old-time hockey and Capitals winger Anthony Mantha recorded a fitting achievement amid the melee. The big forward recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick as he scored a goal, tallied an assist, and got into a fight.

Capitals and Lightning have line brawl after John Carlson gets cross-checked by Ross Colton

The Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning game got chippy when Nicolas Aube-Kubel nailed Cal Foote with a headshot during the second period. The two teams angrily chatted with each other as officials reviewed the call, resulting in a fight and misconducts between Garnet Hathaway and Pat Maroon.

Alex Ovechkin, TJ Oshie, and other Capitals players try out the TOVI – a hockey stick with holes in the blade

The Washington Capitals posted a “spoOoOooky season” video on Wednesday asking players what their favorite scary movie was as they walked out for practice.

But the most notable thing of the video wasn’t the Capitals’ movie picks. It was the sticks they were taking out onto the ice.

Anthony Mantha credits becoming a dad for his hot start to the season: ‘It’s a new strength’

Anthony Mantha‘s first full season with the Washington Capitals last year was derailed almost immediately by a serious shoulder injury that required surgery. The procedure kept him out of action for months. With a healthy start to this season and long-term injuries to forwards Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson, Mantha is aware that he must make an impact early and often for the Caps.

And so far, so good.

The big winger has potted two goals in the team’s first three games and even got into just his second fight as a member of the Caps on Saturday.

Anthony Mantha and Caitlyn Duffy announce birth of their first child, Naomie

Anthony Mantha will not play in the Washington Capitals’ fifth game of the preseason on Wednesday. But it’s for a very good reason. Anthony’s fiancee Caitlyn gave birth to their first child on Tuesday afternoon.

Today, the couple posted photos of their baby girl and announced the name of their new bundle of joy: Naomie Mae Mantha.

Anthony Mantha to miss preseason game against Red Wings after the birth of his first child

The Washington Capitals will begin to wrap up the preseason portion of their schedule with an exhibition matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. They’ll be missing one big part of their lineup for the game in forward Anthony Mantha.

Per NBC Sports Washington’s Matt Weyrich, Mantha will be absent due to the birth of his first child last night. Mantha’s fiancee, Caitlyn Duffy, announced that she was pregnant with a baby girl last April.
