On Saturday, 19 young prospects and free agent invites battled for a chance to impress during Capitals Rookie Camp.
With the Capitals main roster mostly set, there’s only an outside chance that these rookies will make an appearance in the regular-season line-up. But for many, this was the first time fans were able to watch the rookies in action, with Capitals practices re-opening to the public for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

The Washington Nationals lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 12-6 on Tuesday, but for the team’s furry friends in the stands, the fresh air and unrelenting attention from their owners felt like a victory anyway.
Tuesday, the Nationals held their summer Pups in the Park night. Ahead of the first pitch, hundreds of dogs made their way into the stadium and filed into the stands for one of the most pawesome games of the year.

There were no surprises in the first half of the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft, as the Seattle Kraken proceeded to draft its first roster in franchise history, mostly because nearly every one of the Kraken’s picks leaked several hours prior.
But midway through the program, ESPN broadcaster Chris Fowler had a slip of the tongue heard ’round the hockey world. Fowler announced that Seattle’s next pick would be coming from…the Carolina Panthers.

On December 4, 2018, the NHL’s Board of Governors officially announced the approval of Seattle’s expansion bid to become the league’s 32nd team. Now, over two and a half years later, the Seattle Kraken are finally drafting their first roster in franchise history.
Despite nearly every team’s drafted pick leaking to the public ahead of the televised Expansion Draft on ESPN2, the broadcast still had some surprises – from botches of names to picks made by sea creatures.

The Washington Spirit fell 3-2 against NJ/NY Gotham FC on Sunday night after playing more than 84 minutes down a player due to an early red card.
The Spirit, who count Alex Ovechkin as one of their recent investors, played host at Leesburg’s Segra Field for only the second time this season. Riding high on a 2-0 win against the NC Courage in the previous week, the Spirit looked ready to take on their East Coast rivals Gotham FC.

Just as the Capitals were allowing fans back into their home arena on Tuesday night, across town, the NWSL’s Washington Spirit were doing the same. The Spirit welcomed its home crowd back in the stands for the first time since 2019. Over 2,000 fans dotted the stands of Audi Field in socially-distanced groups as the Spirit faced off in a scoreless draw against NJ/NY Gotham FC (formerly Sky Blue FC).

The Washington Capitals went all out to celebrate Nicklas Backstrom’s 1,000th NHL game on Thursday.
The team formed a stick tunnel for Backstrom to skate out to, players wore number 19 jerseys during warmups, and the organization held a pregame ceremony which included a touching tribute video.
The Capitals also debuted a splash page on their website dedicated to all things N1KY, including 20 sweet video messages from Nicky’s past and former teammates and coaches.

On a night where Nicklas Backstrom is being honored for his milestone 1000th NHL game, the Capitals went all-out to celebrate the occasion.
The team formed what NBC Sports Washington’s Al Koken termed a “stick tunnel” — a pseudo honor guard — to welcome Backstrom onto the ice for warmups ahead of his big game.
