The story behind the viral hug between Braden Holtby and a Caps fan at the Capital Pride Parade

Capitals fan Tyler Chambers has been bringing his Braden Holtby jersey with him to the Capital Pride Parade hoping for one thing: to get the jersey signed by Holtby.

Earlier this June, Holtby walked in DC’s Capital Pride Parade for the third time, having only missed one parade in the past four years–when he and the Capitals were busy celebrating their 2018 Stanley Cup championship.

Chambers, who is a member of a Facebook group called “G-Caps” for LGBTQ fans of the Capitals, was absolutely determined to catch Holtby’s attention this year.

Russian Alex Alexeyev gets pranked by Capitals prospects with yellow skate laces like Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin is a trailblazer who has worn bright-yellow skate laces for the entirety of his NHL career. They are as distinctive to the Capitals captain as his gap-toothed smile and his patented one-timer from his office on the power play.

But on Wednesday, the second day of Development Camp, it was another Russian player named Alex who was skating on the ice at Medstar Capitals Iceplex with yellow laces. But it wasn’t out of choice.

In an interview with RMNB’s Ian Oland, Russian defenseman Alex Alexeyev, the Capitals’ 2018 first-round pick, revealed that he was the victim of a prank that turned him into an Ovi impersonator.

Brooks Orpik explores potential coaching role as he attends Capitals Development Camp

Brooks Orpik officially hung up his skates on Tuesday, but was back at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex again the very next day. The expectation was Orpik would not be at camp, instead flying home back to Boston.

But wearing a black t-shirt that read “District of Columbia” on the front, the retired veteran defenseman stood behind the bench and observed behind the glass as he watched prospects for over an hour do skating drills in at Development Camp. At one point, he turned to a Capitals staff member to ask the name of one of the players on the ice.

It was a sight that has sparked discussion among Capitals fans wondering if one day they might see Orpik behind the bench in a coaching role.

Radko Gudas: ‘I got traded to a team that’s well-known for their winning’

The Washington Capitals made their most significant move of the offseason last week. General manager Brian MacLellan dealt Matt Niskanen to Metropolitan Division rival Philadelphia for defenseman Radko Gudas. The trade provided the Caps $3.405 million of salary cap relief and also gave the team a solid bottom four defenseman.

Tuesday, Gudas talked to Capitals media for the first time since being dealt and said he was surprised by the trade.

“I was a little bit shocked, to be honest,” Gudas said. “But when I heard where I’m going I was pretty happy. I got traded to a team that’s well-known for their winning and their will to win every game they play. [I’m] very excited to play with a couple of my countrymen and some of the best players in the world. As I soaked it in more, I got more excited.”

Alex Ovechkin featured in Jeopardy question

On Monday night, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals were the subjects of a question on Jeopardy. The question appeared on Jeopardy Teen Tournament – the teenage version of America’s Favorite Game Show where 15 teens compete for a $100,000 grand prize.

The question is one that every Capitals fan should be able to answer.

Carl Hagelin cites Capitals’ Stanley Cup window and role on team for re-signing. ‘I don’t think I ever thought about going to free agency.’

From the outside looking in, there was no guarantee the Washington Capitals or trade-deadline pickup Carl Hagelin would come to a contract agreement heading into the summer. Hagelin, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was coming off an expensive four-year, $16 million contract. With how close the Capitals were to the salary cap and how many important free agents they had now and in the future, a deal seemed far-fetched.

But late last week, after freeing up $3.405 million and addressing a need on defense (Radko Gudas) with the Matt Niskanen deal, the Caps found enough money to bring Hagelin back with a four-year, $11 million deal that’s worth $2.75 million per season.

According to Hagelin, he never even considered becoming an unrestricted free agent.

San Jose Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson to 8-year contract with third largest cap hit in NHL history

Erik Karlsson has reportedly signed a blockbuster eight-year contract extension with the San Jose Sharks, which is being reported at over $11 million AAV.

The contract would be the third largest in NHL history.

The news was first reported by TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Bradley Beal cheers on hometown team St. Louis Blues in Stanley Cup victory: ‘The city needed this one!’

Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal is a hockey fan. He’s been spotted numerous times at Capitals games over the years, including Game One of the 2019 postseason. Beal has even befriended Capitals’ star center Evgeny Kuznetsov, repping Kuzy’s jersey before a Wizards game and even imitating Kuzy’s bird walk celebration.

But with the Capitals out of contention for the Stanley Cup, Beal was free to cheer on his hometown team, the St. Louis Blues. And cheer he did on social media.

Capitals re-sign Liam O’Brien to a one-year, $700,000 contract

The Washington Capitals announced on Monday that they have signed forward Liam O’Brien to a one-year, two-way contract for $700,000.

The 24-year old O’Brien signed with the Capitals as a free agent in 2014, and has since played five seasons with the Hershey Bears, where he served as an alternate captain in the 2018-19 season. O’Brien accumulated 108 points and 555 penalty minutes in 311 AHL games. He was a member of the Bears team that reached 2016 Calder Cup finals and has 13 points (eight goals, five assists) in 44 AHL playoff appearances.

The Halifax, Nova Scotia native has played 17 career games with the Capitals, though he was not called up to the Capitals in the 2018-19 season. Last season, O’Brien recorded 28 points (15g, 13a) in 74 games for the Bears, including three power play goals and four game-winning goals.
