Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette seems to have found a lineup that he likes after five games of massive changes and uncertainty. Lavy has his forward group lined up for Thursday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes the same way he did against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.
That news means that forward Anthony Mantha is slated to be a healthy scratch for the fourth time in six games. Mantha did not play against the Wild and has not skated in a game since Monday in New York.
The Capitals have lost three of their last five games since Backstrom and Wilson returned.

Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson returned to the Washington Capitals active roster one week ago today. Then the team went on to have their worst week in more than a month, including dropping back-to-back games to the Philadelphia Flyers.
For two of those games, Anthony Mantha was a healthy scratch. For the third, it was Dylan Strome who was the odd man out. Head coach Peter Laviolette has had to make some hard choices lately, and I think we can help him.

After having one of their best months in the Laviolette Era, the Capitals have lost four of six games in January and watched helplessly as their forward lines lost chemistry. Laviolette mandated that both Backstrom and Wilson play in the top six. Instead of bringing the two stars along slowly, Laviolette threw Backstrom and Wilson back into the fire, gave them big responsibility, and changed all of the forward lines – most of which were working previously.

Forward Anthony Mantha has played on the fourth line in Washington’s last two games. That’s an odd fit for a player earning $5.7 million dollars against the salary cap. And it’s continued evidence that the relationship between the player and team is broken.
That’s a shame, because I really like him.

The Washington Capitals took a quick flight up to Columbus for a one-game Metropolitan Division road trip against the Blue Jackets. They’ll do so with a pretty interesting shakeup in their forward lines mainly due to Nic Dowd not traveling with the team.
That shakeup will see Anthony Mantha skate as the fourth line’s left wing. It’s an interesting move for a player that was originally acquired more for his offensive abilities but has shown to be a reliable two-way forward.
