Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom reunited on line to start Training Camp: ‘It feels like back in the day’

The Washington Capitals officially opened Training Camp on Thursday as they took the ice for their customary skating test. The team then got in their first practices under new head coach Spencer Carbery and staff.

Group A players were the first to take the ice, giving us a first possible look at Carbery’s line combinations.

Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom were notably reunited on the first line, with Anthony Mantha joining them on the right wing to complete the trio.

Anthony Mantha and Connor McMichael among new set of faces to join Capitals’ informal skates

With the start of training camp now just days away, more Washington Capitals players are arriving in town to get back onto the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Thursday, we got a whole new batch of faces, including Anthony Mantha and Connor McMichael, who will both be looking to make a big impression on new head coach Spencer Carbery this preseason.

Spencer Carbery on Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha: ‘I have great belief that they’re going to come in, be highly motivated’

As Spencer Carbery starts his first season in Washington, he’ll attempt to revitalize a team that failed to make the playoffs this spring for the first time in nine years. The Capitals’ bounce-back will depend in part on forwards Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha, who both struggled last year. Though Kuznetsov and Mantha were apparently on the trade block this offseason, no trades have yet materialized.

Carbery spoke on the pair during a podcast interview on Mike Vogel’s Break the Ice, where he walked through his plan to help both players return to form.

Anthony Mantha has lost nearly 10 pounds this summer in effort to re-find his game: ‘I was not present and involved enough for my team’

The Washington Capitals put Anthony Mantha on the open market this offseason but found no takers. Now, with the 2023-24 season fast approaching, Mantha wants to earn a big role and prove he should be in the lineup on a consistent basis.

The 28-year-old Quebec native spoke with assembled media at Serge Savard’s golf tournament on Wednesday. He believes he’s primed for a redemption year and it’s going to come on the back of his main goal, losing 10 pounds this summer.

Capitals article confirms Evgeny Kuznetsov requested trade, explains why top-six trade hasn’t materialized

The Washington Capitals and general manager Brian MacLellan entered the 2023 offseason expecting to make a trade that would address their aging and overall relatively unproductive top-six forward group.

That major move was expected by many around the league to feature one or both of Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha being shipped off to another team after disappointing seasons. But, both are still currently Caps.

MacLellan explained the current trade market situation around the league to Capitals’ senior writer Mike Vogel on Thursday and outlined why he has been unable to find a deal. He also reiterated that the Caps are not yet ready to give up on their pursuit.

Capitals reportedly not getting many offers for Anthony Mantha, would rather give him another year under new head coach

The Washington Capitals have made it no secret that forward Anthony Mantha has been available via trade this offseason. The underperforming, 28-year-old winger is entering the final year of his contract that carries a cap hit of $5.7 million.

According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, Eric Duhatschek and Michael Russo’s latest offseason trade board update, the Caps have not found many suitors for Mantha. That news has reportedly caused a change in strategy for the team regarding trying to move him.

Capitals have reportedly ‘openly engaged teams’ about Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha’s availability

This offseason has long been rumored to be one of transition for the Washington Capitals and it appears like general manager Brian MacLellan is getting a head start on the trade market.

According to The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Caps have tested waters around the league regarding both Evgeny Kuznetsov and Anthony Mantha. Both forwards take up a significant amount of the team’s salary cap and moving them could open up more potential avenues for MacLellan to explore.

Capitals have reportedly let teams know that they’re ready to move on from Anthony Mantha

After three relatively unsuccessful seasons with the Washington Capitals, forward Anthony Mantha could be making his way out of DC this summer.

According to the Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Caps have let other teams know that they are ready to move on from Mantha.

The 28-year-old winger has one final season remaining on his current contract that will pay him $5.7 million.

Anthony Mantha hired a ‘mental coach’ after being healthy scratched by Peter Laviolette: ‘It just takes a toll on your confidence’

Anthony Mantha did not have a season that he or the Washington Capitals wanted him to have. Mantha put up just 27 points (11g, 16a) in 67 games and was healthy scratched multiple times by head coach Peter Laviolette. He also dealt with a nagging groin injury down the stretch.

It’s a season that saw the 28-year-old, Quebec native lose his confidence and in a constant state of trying to find his game. At his lowest personal point this year, Mantha hired a mental coach to try and help him regain some of what he had lost.

Mantha says that coaching will continue over the entire offseason.
