Anthony Mantha leaves game against Panthers after taking deflected shot to the head

Anthony Mantha’s best game of the season was cut short early due to a scary and unlucky injury.

After notching two goals earlier in the contest, Mantha was struck by an Evgeny Kuznetsov wrist shot that ramped up off of defender Mike Reilly’s stick. The puck hit Mantha in the left side of his head near his ear.

The big winger needed help to get off of the ice and had a towel pressed to his face.

The Capitals are reportedly still trying to find a team to take on Anthony Mantha’s contract

The Washington Capitals’ desire to offload forward Anthony Mantha and his $5.7 million cap hit has been well known around the league for quite some time. While the big winger moving on from DC was one of the central focuses of the team’s offseason, the noise around him has quieted down with the daily, regular-season grind kicking in.

That changed recently as the rumor mill heated back up and Mantha’s name started popping up in reports from sources around the league again.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman specifically brought up Mantha in his 32 Thoughts column when listing potential, early-season trade targets.

Spencer Carbery calls Anthony Mantha’s two-point night against New Jersey Devils ‘the best game that I’ve seen him play since I’ve been here’

ARLINGTON, VA — The Capitals’ win Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils marked not only the team’s first regulation win of the season but also a standout performance from the oft-struggling Anthony Mantha. After a rocky start to the year that saw Mantha healthy scratched in the Cap’s second game, Mantha was one of the team’s best forwards Wednesday night and put up a two-point (1g, 1a) night.

Head coach Spencer Carbery had high praise for Mantha’s game against New Jersey when speaking to reporters at Friday’s morning skate.

Anthony Mantha appears set to be healthy scratch against Flames

The Washington Capitals jumped on the ice for practice on Sunday for the first time since getting shut out in their Home Opener by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Capitals are preparing to put that disappointment behind them as they’ll host the Calgary Flames at Capital One Arena on Monday night.

While Friday’s season-opening matchup featured a couple of last minute roster tweaks due to the absence of starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper, those moves have now been reset. The biggest news is that Aliaksei Protas is back from his paper move to the Hershey Bears and has been immediately has been placed in his normal right wing spot on the team’s fourth line.

Protas’ arrival back into the fray turned Anthony Mantha into the extra forward at Sunday’s skate. That suggests Mantha will be healthy-scratched against the Flames.

Anthony Mantha skates on fourth line after Capitals’ Opening Night roster reveal

The Washington Capitals took the ice for practice on Wednesday, but not at their usual digs. Alex Ovechkin and crew skated at the Talbot County Ice Skating Rink in Easton, Maryland. The team made the trip out to the Eastern Shore for team bonding on Monday afternoon.

The Capitals golfed during their day off on Tuesday, but got back to business today as they prepare to open their season at home on Friday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The team officially announced their Opening Night roster hours before the practice, and made updates to their lines in what could be a preview of the lineup Spencer Carbery could deploy in his first official NHL game as bench boss.

The most notable change was the addition of Anthony Mantha back into the fray on the right wing of the fourth line.

What are the options the Capitals have with Anthony Mantha?

The Washington Capitals played their final game of the preseason on Saturday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The lineup that head coach Spencer Carbery sent out onto the ice at Capital One Arena was one that he said was “very close to an NHL regular season opening night lineup”.

It did not include veteran forward Anthony Mantha. Instead, Carbery opted for younger players like Connor McMichael and Matthew Phillips, who appear to have edged Mantha in battles for roles within the team’s top-nine forward group.

Naturally, that leads to questions regarding Mantha’s status with the team. Sunday was the last day for NHL teams to waive players in order to set their Opening Day rosters by 5 pm ET on Monday and Mantha was not waived.

So, what exactly are the options the Caps have with Mantha and his $5.7 million cap hit moving forward if he’s on the outs of the team for a second-straight season?

Anthony Mantha will not play in Capitals’ final preseason game, considered to be dress rehearsal for season opener

The Washington Capitals announced their roster for their final preseason game, a home tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Capital One Arena. The lines and pairings will look very close to the team’s opening lineup per head coach Spencer Carbery.

Matthew Phillips is the most notable inclusion on the roster. Phillips has impressed in Training Camp as he looks to earn a full-time NHL job for the first time in his career while veteran winger Anthony Mantha will sit out.

Capitals announce roster for first preseason game under head coach Spencer Carbery

After only three days of on-ice Training Camp, the Washington Capitals will host their first game of the 2023 preseason.

Sunday, the Capitals will take on the Buffalo Sabres at Capital One Arena as Spencer Carbery makes his head coaching debut with the team.

The Capitals will sport a lineup that features a combination of veteran NHL players, minor leaguers, and prospects.

Anthony Mantha hasn’t been the star the Capitals hoped for when they traded for him: ‘That player’s here (now)’

When the Washington Capitals acquired Anthony Mantha from the Detroit Red Wings in April 2021, they thought they were getting a talented playmaker who would fully blossom into a star without having to be The Man in DC.

“He’s the main guy (with Detroit) and there’s probably a little pressure on him to produce,” Capitals GM Brian MacLellan said after the trade happened. “I think he comes here and he’s just got to fit in. He’s going to have a veteran group of players. I think he’s going to learn from those veterans. I think we have a good leadership group of older guys that have been around. We have a lot of guys that have won a Cup. So I think it’s up to him to fit in, play well, relax, and compete and I think everything will work out.”

Except, everything hasn’t worked out. In three seasons with the Caps, Mantha has scored only 24 goals and 58 points in 118 games, struggling through injury and major bouts of inconsistency. Mantha hit his low point in 2022-23 when Peter Laviolette healthy-scratched him multiple times. MacLellan even looked to deal Mantha over the summer, but could find no takers.

Now, Mantha is doing everything he can to become the player he once was as he enters the final season of a four-year, $22.8 million contract.
