Two former Capitals, two former Bears make Canadian Olympic team

With the NHL’s decision to not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics, players that would never have sniffed their national teams at an Olympic event have earned a chance at making their country’s respective rosters.

In December, we saw former Capital and current Hershey Bear, Chris Bourque as well as Ryan Stoa named to the US Olympic team in late December. Thursday, the Canadian Olympic team announced their squad and it features even more former Capitals and Bears.

Caps vs Canucks pregame: Home cookin’

The Washington Capitals have not lost at Capital One Arena since November 30 against the Los Angeles Kings. That streak is now nine victories long and the team that will look to end it tonight is the struggling Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks have lost four straight overall and five straight on the road.

Caps vs Hurricanes pregame: Dinged up

The Washington Capitals may be playing their division rival Carolina Hurricanes tonight with less than a full deck. The two squads haven’t met since the preseason and the Caps depth chart for this one could look more like one from a preseason game due to injury and illness to a few integral players.

Devils downed by defensemen: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals saw an opportunity to take the Metropolitan Division lead in a matchup with the New Jersey Devils and boy did they show up ready. The 5-2 victory involved standout performances from some defensemen on both sides of the puck.

The Caps out-shot the Devils 35 to 27 and out-attempted them 56 to 50.

Barry Trotz records 737th career win, now ranks fifth all-time in NHL history

Saturday night at Capital One Arena, Barry Trotz reached another significant personal milestone. After his Capitals 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils, Trotz earned his 737th career win, passing current Rangers assistant coach Lindy Ruff for fifth all-time in NHL history.

All four coaches in front of him have won a Stanley Cup.

After beating Devils, Capitals take sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division

The Washington Capitals entered action one point behind their opponent on Saturday night, the New Jersey Devils in the Metropolitan Division standings.

After the team’s 5-2 win over the Devils, the Capitals took sole possession of first place in the division. The Capitals have now won eight straight at home and ten of eleven overall.

Djoos lets loose: Caps beat Devils 5-2

We had on our hands a battle atop the Metro Division with the victor taking sole ownership of that renowned peak. Within that battle was another matchup between two Vezina capable goaltenders, a return of a beloved Swedish soldier, and the last game of a tumultuous, but still fun, 2017.

Tom Wilson got things started with a goal in tight, then Christian Djoos continued the Caps hot start with another tally, but John Moore would cool things off with one of his own.

John Carlson slapped home a bomb on the power play to extend the lead to two once more. Matt Niskanen added another. Zajac would edge the Devils closer before a Backstrom empty netter.

Caps beat Devils 5-2!

Caps vs Bruins pregame: Scoreless streak

The Washington Capitals have now gone over 145 minutes without scoring a single goal. Getting shutout in back to back games will do that for you. They have an opponent tonight in the Boston Bruins that they own recent great success against so it’s time to get back to winning ways.

The worst ice and the best German: Rangers beat Caps 1-0

It’s freezing outside, the NHL holiday break is over, the World Junior Classic has started, the Winter Classic is close, and we had a matchup of Metro-Division foes. The end of December is definitely fun for the hockey world, but would it be fun for Caps fans on Wednesday rivalry night?

We got sloppy nothingness through twenty minutes. And then some failed power plays on both sides, but more of the same sloppy nothingness through forty minutes. Philipp Grubauer stood on his head to keep the third…also scoreless. Overtime? Nothing there either.

So here’s some shootout bullets.

  • Zuccarello put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Oshie did not put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Zibanejad put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Ovechkin did not put the biscuit in the basket.

Rangers beat Caps 1-0.

Overtime sadness: Coyotes beat Caps 3-2

The Washington Capitals and Arizona Coyotes battled to the death in a hockey war that not one human has ever seen prior. Sike, this game was real boring and the sleeping pets everyone sent in on Twitter were the only things keeping me awake.

First period? Just skip it. Nobody did anything. TJ Oshie, definitely spurred on by the cat pics, opened the scoring six minutes into the second.

Christian Dvorak tied things up on a power play. Evgeny Kuznetsov broke that tie minutes later. Fischer re-tied it very late.

Keller finished it in overtime.

Coyotes beat Caps 3-2.
