The Caps and Habs both totaled 26 shots, but the Habs out-attempted the Caps five-on-five 51 to 40.

Lars Eller has come to play this season. The Danish forward is on pace to top his single season career high in both goals and points.
His tenth goal of this season came late in the Caps 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens, breathing life into the final minute before the buzzer eventually sounded.

As your government prepares to shutdown, it appears that your favorite hockey team has got a head start. The Washington Capitals, in the back half of a back to back and coming off of a bye week (thanks NHL), matched up with the struggling Montreal Canadiens at Capital One Arena. A game that would normally star Canadian beauts Braden Holtby and Carey Price instead gave us Philipp Grubauer and Antti Niemi. Which backup would come out on top?
Nothing happened in the first. Max Pacioretty and John Carlson traded power play goals in the second. Paul Byron put the Habs up one in the third. Pacioretty would get another on an empty netter. Lars Eller breathed new life in a game with a marker of his own, but that was it.
Canadiens beat Caps 3-2.

The Washington Capitals had their first game since coming off their scheduled bye week and their opponent, the New Jersey Devils very obviously did not. The rusty Caps somehow scraped out a point before falling to the Devils 4-3 in overtime.
The Devils both out-shot the Caps 32 to 19 and out-attempted them five-on-five 47 to 28. Yikes.

Lost in the abyss of the holidays, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman had an interesting nugget about Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan in a late December “31 Thoughts” column.
In Friedman’s ninth thought, the reporter named several general managers who are without contracts for next season.
After listing GMs from four other teams, Friedman says, “I believe Brian MacLellan is on this list too.”

The Washington Capitals sure left it late last night in Raleigh against the Carolina Hurricanes, but a win is a win. In their 4-3 victory the team scored two goals within the last 3:08 of the third period to sneak out into their bye week with two points.
The Hurricanes out-shot the Caps 39 to 27, but the five-on-five shot attempts were locked up at 45 apiece.

The Washington Capitals came into Friday night’s action looking to redeem a loss that they suffered the night before to the Carolina Hurricanes. They would try to do that against that same Hurricanes team, but this time in hostile Raleigh.
Jordan Staal slammed home an early power play chance to give the Canes an early home lead, but Lars Eller’s skate would have none of that and we were through 20 minutes locked up at one apiece.
Alex Ovechkin blasted his 28th tally past Cam Ward before Sebastian Aho responded with one of his own. Jeff Skinner gave the Canes the lead once more with a snipe past Philipp Grubauer. Brett Connolly converted a giveaway late in the third. Jay Beagle beat the buzzer.

The Washington Capitals went into Thursday night’s home fixture with the Carolina Hurricanes winners of their last ten games at Capital One Arena. That streak is now finished after the Caps fell 3-1 to the Canes, but ten was a cool round number anyway.
The Caps were out-shot by the Hurricanes 33 to 28 and out-attempted five-on-five 54 to 48.

Wednesday, SportsLogos.net’s Chris Creamer reported that the US Army had officially filed a notice of opposition to the Vegas Golden Knights trademark. Due to this, the team was given 40 days to respond or risk losing their #brand.
I have a bit of a storied history in regards to complaining about the Vegas Golden Knights on this platform, but even I have to admit their response was a pretty great one.

What’s better than ten? Eleven. Your Washington Capitals will be looking for their eleventh straight victory at home as they take on a division rival in the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have not been so great on the road of late, giving up a combined twelve goals in their last two road tries.
