Idiotic penalties and blown leads: numbers for the morning after

An all too familiar postseason fate was bestowed upon the Washington Capitals by the Columbus Blue Jackets in Game One of the first round of the Stanley Cup loffs. In the Blue Jackets 4-3 overtime win, the Caps were plagued by stupid penalties, inability to make simple plays in dire times, and turtling that would make Donatello proud.

The Capitals out-shot the Blue Jackets 30 to 27, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 51 to 46.

Caps vs Blue Jackets pregame: Playoff hockey is back and we all want to vomit (Game One)

Well, we have arrived at the base of the seemingly insurmountable mountain once more. We have said our goodbyes to the regular season and now must venture up towards the summit, battling despair, nausea, and heartache along the way to a hopeful date with Lord Stanley’s Cup.

The Capitals first test this postseason comes against a familiar Metro Division foe, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both teams will enter the playoffs at almost full strength, with the Caps only missing Jay Beagle and the Jackets only missing Lukas Sedlak.

Puck drop is at 7:30 PM on the USA Network. Peter is back recapping playoff hockey.

Goodbye regular season: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals bested the New Jersey Devils 5-3 at Capital One Arena, wrapping up the 2017-18 regular season and now will move onto the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There they will meet the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The two teams recorded 26 shots apiece, but the Caps had the edge in five-on-five shot attempts 52 to 42.

Season Finale: Caps beat Devils 5-3

The Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils met in both team’s last regular season game. In a tilt that still featured major playoff match up implications, the Caps were victorious and now know that they will be playing either the Columbus Blue Jackets or Philadelphia Flyers in the first round. Last recap of the 82-game regular season and you all got stuck with me!

Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring with his league leading 48th goal of the season. Nico Hischier tied things up for the Devils. Nicklas Backstrom restored the lead and Michal Kempny then added to it. Miles Wood scored to end the second and Patrick Maroon tied the game once more.

Ovi added one more. His 49th. Andre Burakovsky scored the Caps fifth.

Caps beat Devils 5-3!

You’re welcome Colorado: numbers for the morning after

The Caps playoff seed has been set and they are the Metropolitan Division winners, but they still have a couple games left in this year’s campaign. They headed to St. Louis for their last road fixture of the regular season and came away with a 4-2 victory.

Said victory allowed the Colorado Avalanche to hold onto the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference and put the flailing Blues further into desperation mode.

The Blues out-shot the Caps 36 to 34 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 62 to 48.

Pens get punched: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals went into Pittsburgh to play the flightless birds that have so tormented them throughout history and came away Metropolitan Division winners for the third-straight season. The Caps left PPG Paints Arena with a 3-1 win, but something tells me they might be returning to said arena in the not so distant future.

The Penguins out-shot the Capitals 37 to 34, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 40 to 33.

Rocked like a hurricane: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals five-game overall winning streak and seven-game home winning streak have both been ended by the Carolina Hurricanes after a 4-1 loss at Capital One Arena.

The Hurricanes out-shot the Caps 30 to 21 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 49 to 44.

Miserable: Hurricanes beat Caps 4-1

The Washington Capitals have clinched a playoff spot, but there is still more work to do in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division. Two teams from that division matched up tonight in DC and the one from Carolina took home the two points and helped extend the battle for first in the division.

Michal Kempny got us started with his first goal as a Capital, but that lead was very short-lived as Derek Ryan tied things up almost immediately. Justin Faulk then walked right down the slot and fired a shot past Braden Holtby to give the Canes their first lead of the game.

Sebastian Aho scored late in the third to extend said lead and the Canes added an empty netter.

Hurricanes beat Caps 4-1.

Shane shines: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals took both games of the home and home against the New York Rangers, finishing off the back half in an extra frame 3-2. The Caps needed some help from the Colorado Avalanche against the Philadelphia Flyers to officially clinch a playoff spot, but that help did not come.

The Rangers out-shot the Caps 37 to 33, but were out-attempted by the Caps at five-on-five 46 to 40.

Caps vs Rangers pregame: Can they clinch?

The Washington Capitals can officially clinch a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference tonight. Woo-hoo! If the red-clad boys earn a point and the Philadelphia Flyers lose in regulation, or if they win outright and the Flyers lose in any manner, the Caps will be returning to the big dance.

We’ll see how it plays out at 8 PM on NBCSN. Pat will have your recap.
