Capitals cut 22 players from Training Camp roster

The Washington Capitals announced a huge group of cuts from their Training Camp roster on Friday. Twenty-two players were sent back to their respective clubs, trimming down the overall group in DC to 40.

The Caps’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears start their Training Camp early next week and all but one of the cuts in this group is headed to Pennsylvania for that. Four of the players will need to make it through waivers before being allowed to do so.

The news was announced by Capitals PR.

Capitals re-assign Joe Snively to Taxi Squad, send Michael Sgarbossa to Hershey

Hershey Bears leading scorer Joe Snively has been re-assigned to the Capitals’ taxi squad and Michael Sgarbossa is headed in the opposite direction.

The team announced the news through their Twitter account, Thursday just before noon.

TJ Oshie does not participate in Capitals’ optional practice, Conor Sheary and John Carlson to miss Bruins game

Washington Capitals forward TJ Oshie suffered an upper-body injury very early in last Saturday’s 2-0 shutout win over the New York Islanders. Oshie would then miss the next day’s game against the Vancouver Canucks and not take the morning skate before Tuesday’s matchup with the Winnipeg Jets.

He returned to the ice for the first time Wednesday morning but did not stick around for the Capitals’ optional practice immediately after.

Capitals recall Michael Sgarbossa from taxi squad

Michael Sgarbossa has been recalled by the Capitals from their taxi squad. The forward has bounced around the organization several times this season.

Capitals bring back Michael Sgarbossa and Zach Fucale to active roster before Blues game

The Washington Capitals made a pair of roster moves before puck drop against the St. Louis Blues, Friday night.

Zach Fucale and Michael “The SCOARbossa” Sgarbossa were recalled from the taxi squad. Fucale was summoned via the NHL’s new “goaltender exemption.”

Capitals recall forward Aliaksei Protas, send group of four players back to Hershey

The kings of roster tinkering this season are at it again. With a handful of days before their next game, the Washington Capitals shifted some pieces back and forth with their AHL affiliate, Hershey Bears.

The Capitals recalled forward Aliaksei Protas from Hershey and sent defensemen Alex Alexeyev and Lucas Johansen via the taxi squad and forward Michael Sgarbossa and goaltender Pheonix Copley via the main roster back to the AHL.

Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie to miss Sunday’s game against Devils due to illness

The Washington Capitals finally looked like they were getting healthy. And then a non-COVID illness struck. First, it took Lars Eller out of the lineup. Now Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie will be unable to suit up in Sunday’s game.

For Backstrom, it’s the second time he’s had to sit out again since coming back from a hip injury that kept him out of the first two months of the season.

Michael Sgarbossa clears waivers, assigned to Capitals taxi squad

Michael Sgarbossa will continue to Scoarbossa in the Capitals organization.

Twenty-four hours after being placed on waivers, the depth center went unclaimed by the other 31 NHL teams.

Capitals place Michael Sgarbossa on waivers

If nothing goes wrong between now and Wednesday night at 7pm, the Washington Capitals will have all four of their starting centers in a game for the first time this season: Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, Lars Eller, and Nic Dowd.

With that much center depth back on the NHL roster, the Capitals have placed fill-in pivot, Michael Sgarbossa, on waivers.
