John Carlson has a heavy shot and it was on full display Saturday night in Annapolis. With the Caps up one goal over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, the Caps defenseman buried a nifty, through-the-crease pass from Chandler Stephenson in the second period.
With an almost completely empty net, Carlson’s accurate shot splintered an in-goal camera case used by Maple Leafs photographer Mark Blinch (follow here).

Saturday night, the Washington Capitals delivered a lights out performance against the Toronto Maple Leafs, cruising to a 5-2 victory at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
After the Capitals’ third consecutive outdoor game victory, captain Alex Ovechkin spoke to the NHL Network’s Jamie Hersch and had a radical new idea for the NHL postseason.
ANNAPOLIS – Saturday morning, Washington Capitals forward TJ Oshie posted a picture of the USS Saint Paul, a ship both Oshie’s grandparents served on. The ship is a Baltimore-class Cruiser that served the United States Navy for 26 years and earned 18 battle stars during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
Later that night, Oshie took the ice at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at the United States Naval Academy, with 200 midshipmen minding the rails along the faux aircraft carrier where the 2018 Stadium Series took place.
“It was pretty amazing out the there,” Oshie said of his feelings when he first stepped out in front of 29,516 freezing fans before ticking off practically the entire NHL press release about the game. “I don’t think you can ever get used to this. This is awesome.”

A night that most probably had pinned on their calendar has now passed as the Washington Capitals took down the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 in Annapolis, Maryland outdoors at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. I don’t think I appreciated the full spectacle of the night until it was upon us. What a great atmosphere and fun night of hockey in its purest form.
The Caps out-shot the Leafs 34 to 29, but the Leafs out-attempted the Caps five-on-five 63 to 47.

Being scared during the jet flyover wasn’t Andre Burakovsky’s only viral moment of the night.
Late in the third period with the Caps enjoying a 5-2 lead, the Burracuda rubbed elbows and gyrated with TJ Oshie on the bench.
There was a flyover at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium after the Star-Spangled Banner was sung, and something special happened at the Caps blue line when it happened.
Precious cinnamon roll Andre Burakovsky got very scared.
Saturday night during Hockey Night In Canada’s Stadium Series telecast, some major Capitals news was reported. Analyst Nick Kypreos announced that general manager Brian MacLellan is receiving a multi-year contract extension.

When’s the last time you saw the Washington Capitals score a power-play goal on the rush? With Nicklas Backstrom’s marker (his 16th this season) off an excellent pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov, you can restart the timer.
With the Stadium Series outdoor game tied 1-1 in the first period, Alex Ovechkin said nyet and scored the 598th goal of his NHL career.
