The NHL went all out to honor the men and women of the United States Navy.
Hours before puck drop at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the NHL published aerial video showing an overhead view of the outdoor rink. According to the Maple Leafs, the rink was built atop a 35,760 square foot model “aircraft carrier” in the middle of the stadium.
The wind is gone and the game is on. Tonight, under the lights at the Naval Academy, the Washington Capitals will play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With winds finally beginning to die down, the NHL just announced that the Caps-Leafs Stadium Series game will go on as originally scheduled at 8 PM.
Both teams will get their first chance to get on the ice and adjusted to the unique sightlines during pregame warmups.
It is 45 degrees in Annapolis, Maryland on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Let’s play some hockey.

Friday afternoon was supposed to be a rare opportunity for friends and family of Capitals players to skate outdoors on the newly constructed rink at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Instead, a powerful wind storm forced the cancellation of activities in Annapolis, forcing the team to improvise.
The Capitals hosted the family skate at their practice facility, Kettler Capitals Iceplex.
Here were our ten favorite moments.
The Washington Capitals beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in a hockey game. That sentence doesn’t make it sound like a special night, but it was a really special night. The game was played outside at the Naval Academy, which was neat, and the Caps played excellently, which is basically unprecedented these days.
Evgeny Kuznetsov kicked us off, scoring from the doorstep on the power play. Zach Hyman fired back with a screened shot to beat Braden Holtby. Alex Ovechkin restored the lead after a solid pass from Tom Wilson to make it 2-0 (and to record his 598th career goal). Before period one was up, Nick Backstrom added a rare rush power-play goal assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Nazem Kadri gave the Leafs some hope early in the second, but John Carlson responded less than a minute later. Jakub Vrana converted a solo breakaway to make it 5-2 and chase Frederick Andersen from net. Nothing much happened in the third period aside from a major power outage that was not at all a metaphor for anything, thank you very much.

We all know TJ Oshie is great with kids.
He demonstrates that all the time with his own children, just as he did this morning when his daughters videobombed his interview in the cutest way ever.
During the Caps morning skate for the Stadium Series, Oshie showed his love for kids again by helping a little kid wearing a homemade Oshie cape “fly” around the ice.

With the Washington DC area under a high-wind warning and enduring, at times, tropical-storm force gusts, the Capitals and Maple Leafs first practices on the outdoor rink at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium were cancelled.
At 10:30am, the Caps took to the ice at their practice facility instead and jumped out onto the ice for their second straight day of preparations ahead of the nationally broadcast Stadium Series game.
