Following their triumphant gold medal win at the Winter Olympics in Peyongchang, the United States women’s hockey team were honored at the Stadium Series game. Their reception at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium was electric, though there was one notable absence from the lineup: star Hilary Knight.
There’s nothing quite like a friendly bet to make a hockey game more interesting. David MacNaughton, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, made a wager with Larry Hogan, Governor of Maryland, over the outcome of the Stadium Series game.
When the Capitals came out triumphant over the Toronto Maple Leafs, so too did Governor Hogan. On Friday, MacNaughton paid up on that bet, donning a Capitals jersey for a full day of meetings at the Canadian Embassy.
Following the Capitals’ 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL Stadium Series game in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, RMNB crasher Lindsey shared her reflections on the community she’s found in hockey fandom. Her post is reprinted here with permission.
When people ask me why I like ice hockey, coming from Ireland, as I do, I can only shrug my shoulders.
About four and a half years ago, one of my best friends took me to my first NHL game. It was the New York Rangers against the Boston Bruins, in Madison Square Garden and it was pretty life-altering.
By the end of this month, I will have been to five more NHL arenas (as well as the Navy Memorial Stadium in Annapolis) and I will have seen nine more teams play. I’ve found it hard to explain why I love ice hockey so much. Some of it might be down to the fact I played field hockey for about twenty years, and ice hockey is similar, but with players wearing knives on their feet, shooting a disc of vulcanized rubber about at high speeds, and occasionally fighting each other.
But another important part of hockey, for me, has been the sense of community.
Friday afternoon, I spent an hour with NBC4 Washington’s Heather McDonough and cameraman Brooks Meriwether. I answered questions and gave them a tour of RMNB Headquarters, which is a suuuuuuper elaborate way of saying my basement.
The feature was on NBC4’s Caps Stadium Series: Live from Annapolis pregame show Saturday night and aired directly after Sherree Burruss’s interviews with Gary Bettman and Ted Leonsis. I note this because the NHL commissioner and the Caps owner were my warmup acts. Thank you, gentlemen. 👍
My 11-month-old son Ethan Wesley, who we named after Caps PA announcer Wes Johnson, even made an appearance.
The Stadium Series game is the gift that keeps on giving.
On Monday, the Capitals posted a video with behind-the-scenes footage from their victorious locker room. The most notable part of the nearly two-minute clip was the final 18 seconds. Jakub Vrana gives a tiny speech saluting Braden Holtby, before giving the Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender a light-up motorcycle helmet.
Two-and-a-half years ago, Emanuel Borja was introduced to Carolina Soto through a mutual friend. Carolina was beautiful, sure, but there was an indescribable chemistry Emanuel had never felt before.
“We hit it off instantly. We just clicked,” Emanuel said. “I had no doubt in my mind that there was absolutely something special about her from the first time I talked to her.”
The couple met right before Halloween, and by Christmas, Emanuel knew he wanted to be more than friends.
“I had received some tickets to a Caps game as a Christmas present and decided to take her since she’d never been to a hockey game before,” Emanuel said. “She ended up loving it. I let her wear my jersey and she loved the goal horn, the lights and how fast the game moved. That same night I asked her to be my girlfriend and she said yes!”
Fast-forward to Saturday’s Stadium Series game and Emanuel had another important question for Carolina.
The nor’easter winds that cancelled practices and threatened Saturday’s Stadium Series game did end up having an effect on the game after all.
At the ten minute mark of the third period, a blackout occurred at the Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The explanation was not immediately clear, but Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun’s Rachael Pacella, the blackout was due to a split-second power reduction.
Alex Ovechkin has one of the hardest shots in hockey history and another goal puck has the scars to prove it.
Over the weekend, the NHL put all the Stadium Series goal pucks up for auction and Ovechkin’s is missing a chunk of vulcanized rubber.
Saturday night at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the Washington Capitals remained undefeated outdoors, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2.
While the Caps reunited with their first-round playoff opponent from last season, TJ Oshie had a reunion of his own with a former high school classmate.
