Saturday night during Hockey Night In Canada’s Stadium Series telecast, some major Capitals news was reported. Analyst Nick Kypreos announced that general manager Brian MacLellan is receiving a multi-year contract extension.
“I think we can scratch general manager Brian MacLellan off the list of general managers needing new contracts,” Kypreos said. “From my understanding, Brian and the Capitals have agreed to a multi-year deal moving forward.”
Elliotte Friedman first reported that MacLellan was in the last year of his contract in late December.
Reporter Chris Johnston also had some news on Capitals head coach Barry Trotz, who is in the final year of his pact.
“Well, the conversation about his future has been pretty rampant in Washington for the last little while, but not so much around the league,” Johnston said. “He is in the final year of his deal. That’s an unusual situation for a coach to find himself. I believe it’s gotten to the point where if he’s not signed soon, and it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen, that other teams — we’ve had this strange season where no coaching changes have been made — but other teams are going to come out looking for him perhaps as we get to the offseason these next few weeks. Kind of a strange under-the-radar thing. We’re talking about a team that woke up this morning first place in the standings. But Barry’s future in Washington is very much uncertain.”
Friedman shared his belief that associate coach Todd Reirden is the “heir apparent.”
“And if he’s not back, all of the intelligence says it’s going to be Todd Reirden, assistant coach here,” Elliotte Friedman said. “Last year, Arizona, Buffalo, and Florida all asked to interview him. They were all declined. So it’s believed he’s the heir apparent.”
“Of course a trip to the final or a Stanley Cup win would change all of that real quick,” Nick Kypreos added.
