Next Saturday’s Stadium Series game will be short one superstar. Months after promotions including Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews, the latter will have to sit the game out.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced center Auston Matthews is expected to miss at least ten days due to a shoulder injury suffered during Thursday’s 4-3 shootout win over the New York Islanders.

Matthews’ injury came one shift after he scored the game-tying goal in the third period.

With one minute and 13 seconds left, Matthews was sandwiched between Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech and forward Cal Clutterbuck. Matthews immediately left the ice.

Matthews stayed on the bench for a few seconds, but soon went down the tunnel and did not return.

“He’s day-to-day,” Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said after practice Friday. “He’ll get looked at more today, and then we’ll know more about the day-to-day tomorrow.”

Matthews underwent an MRI Friday. The team knew more about his injury today, when it was announced he will miss at least ten days.

This isn’t Matthews’ first injury of the season. The star missed four games in November with an upper-body injury and six games in December with a concussion. William Nylander will fill in at center while Matthews is absent.
