Caps vs Rangers pregame: Guess who’s back

They want to know if he still got it. They say the game’s changed, they want to know how I feel about it. Andre Burakovsky is the name, he is back, and we will get to find out tonight if he is truly still Dre. Him and the rest of the Caps have the tough challenge of trying to best a red hot Henrik Lundqvist and the rest of his fellow Metro Divison Ranger friends.

Caps expel their San Jose demons: numbers for the morning after

The San Jose Sharks are normally a boogeyman team for the Washington Capitals, especially when the two teams play in our nation’s capital. Monday night, instead of turtling, the Capitals knifed up the Sharks, defeating them 4-1.

The Capitals outshot the Sharks 29 to 25, but were out-attempted at five-on-five 46 to 40.

A 16-year-old goalie in Finland made 100 saves in a single game and still lost

Remember the name Juuso Kopra because you just might hear that name again in the near future. The Finnish goaltender, who just turned 16 six days ago, plays for the Kisa-Eagles’ under-18 team in Finland’s Jr. B Mestis.

On Sunday, Kopra’s team lost to Porin Ässät 5-0. Normally that scoreline would reflect poorly on the losing goaltender, but Kopra made 100 saves on 105 shots in the losing effort. 39 of those saves came in the third period alone.

You’re reading that correctly: One game, 100 saves.

Jackets leave DC feeling blue: Caps beat Blue Jackets 4-3

From the outset, this game between the Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets was billed as the battle of two Vezina Trophy-winning goalies. Braden Holtby and Sergei Bobrovsky, along with their buddy in Montreal, are the cream of the crop when it comes to dudes who stop rubber discs in the NHL. Who would come out the victor in this one? As we all know, goalie wins are the key indicator of best goalie, so analytics that if you want.

Once a nacho boy now a goal scorer, Brett Connolly got the good guys off to a fast start, then Alex Chiasson made that start even better with a goal of his own. 2-0 Caps after 20 minutes.

In the second, Artemi Panarin finished off a dominating Columbus shift to narrow the Caps lead and Matt Calvert scored shorthanded to tie the game up. Alex Ovechkin did the thing that he does on the power play to restore the lead.

In the third, Evgeny Kuznetsov stayed hot and boosted the Caps lead back to two. Werenski tightened things with a late goal.

Caps beat Blue Jackets 4-3!

‘I liked us’: numbers for the morning after

“I liked us” is a quote that Mike Babcock gave to the media after his Leafs lost to the Caps on Saturday night in the crazy Alex Ovechkin hat trick game. I know this because I watched Steve Dangle’s LFR that he put out the next day. Steve has a term he likes to use called an “honest loss.”

I think it describes this Capitals 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings well. It was a honest loss in a game where “I liked us”. The Caps weren’t bad, the Kings weren’t exactly “better”, you just can’t win all 82 games in a season.

The Capitals out-shot the Kings 29 to 27 and out-attempted them five-on-five 52 to 45.

The great eight is still great: numbers for the morning after

The Caps entered action on Saturday night looking for their second three-game winning streak of the season. They got it against the NHL’s best offensive team, downing the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 in a game where their captain shone brightest.

The Maple Leafs out-shot the Capitals 29 to 21 and out-attempted them five-on-five 51 to 34. Most of that damage occurred in the third period with the Leafs desperate for a comeback.

Great day to be named Alex: Caps beat Leafs 4-2

The Capitals and Maple Leafs faced off in a battle of former playoff foes. The two teams, both playing the back half of back to backs, rekindled their “friendship” in a game where the Caps could extend their winning streak to three games.

Alex Ovechkin in the midst of getting booed, went through the entire Leafs team to open the scoring. He doubled his total on the power play shortly after. 2-0 lead for the Caps after 20 minutes.

Jakub Vrana converted a breakaway for his seventh of the season. 3-0 good guys after 40 minutes.

Jake Gardiner struck early in the third. Zaitsev would follow with his own tally shortly after. That Ovechkin dude would seal it with an empty net goal for his hat trick.

Caps beat Leafs 4-2!

I Vrana some more of that: Caps beat Senators 5-2

The Caps needed a win to restore faith and to get back on track after yet another lopsided loss on Monday night. They got just that, but now the challenge is to do it again and again and again.

Jakub Vrana, one time nacho eater, got the Caps on the board first. Alex Ovechkin, reunited with his bff Nicklas Backstrom, put the Caps up two.

Evgeny Kuznetsov sniped on the power play and Vrana got a puck stuck under the bar, but totally in the net. Ryan Dzingel scored for Ottawa. The Caps were up 4-1 after 40 minutes.

Mike Hoffman buried a Mark Stone rebound. Alex Chiasson buried an empty netter.

Caps beat Senators 5-2!

Caps vs Senators pregame: searching for consistency

That whole “put a streak together” thing that I spoke about the Caps doing in the last pregame did not go to plan. The Caps have, multiple times now, put together a complete effort and then immediately fallen on their faces for a couple games after. It’s the Ottawa Senators in town this time to see if the Caps have what it takes to bounce back once more and hopefully string together a few consistently good performances.

The battle between two of North America’s capital cities starts at 7PM on NBCSWA. I have your recap.

One step forward, two steps back: numbers for the morning after

The Caps had a chance on Monday night to build off a genuinely good victory over the Minnesota Wild and maybe soothe some fan worries. They didn’t do that. In a 4-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, they just doubled down on suck.

The Flames out-shot the Caps 39 to 30 and at five-on-five out-attempted them 47 to 37. That’s real bad.
