The Washington Capitals are kicking off the new month with a three game trip to California. They begin in San Jose to face off against the Sharks.

Did someone order a big ol’ dose of #RMNBAfterDark? If you did, you’re in luck! The Capitals have traveled out to California to kick off their three late night game marathon, starting with the San Jose Sharks. The Capitals will still be without Nicklas Backstrom, but the good news is that Carl Hagelin is returning to the third line!
Take a quick nap or put a pot of coffee on because puck drop is at 10:30 PM. Peter will have the recap.

In addition to being the first-ever woman to compete in the NHL All-Star skills competition, Olympic gold medallist, five-time IIHF Worlds Championships gold medalist, and Isobel Cup champion in the NWHL, Kendall Coyne Schofield can now add San Jose Sharks color commentator to her laundry list of accomplishments.
“I’ve always felt a part of the San Jose family since I left that moment,” Coyne Schofield told NBC Sports, referencing her time at the 2019 NHL All-Star weekend. “And everyone’s been so supportive, and the outreach from the San Jose community just to me as a hockey player has been unbelievable. So, I’m really excited to transition that into the broadcasting realm.”

The San Jose Sharks have started the offseason with a bang. On Monday, they re-signed Erik Karlsson to an eight-year deal and Friday they announced their acquisition of a new yellow Labrador puppy named Finn for the upcoming season.
Finn measures one-foot, four-inches and weighs slightly more than a watermelon, eight pounds. He should be a great addition to the squad.

The Sharks and Blues entered Game Five of the Western Conference Final tied with two wins apiece. And while the game started off relatively evenly–the Sharks had eleven shots in the first period, but the Blues had one goal on four shots–the Sharks sank pretty quickly after that.
The Blues ended up with twice as many shots as the Sharks (40-21) while the Sharks had six times as many penalty minutes (36-6).
By the end of the game, the Sharks’ bench was six players short: Erik Karlsson, Joe Pavelski, Tomas Hertl, and Joonas Donskoi with injuries, and Micheal Haley and Evander Kane for misconducts.
Halfway through the third period the Sharks even tweeted out a picture of their depleted bench with an emoji version of the sarcastic “this is fine” meme.

The Colorado Avalanche came into San Jose’s Shark Tank (aka the SAP Center) for the finale of an intense, back-and-forth Second Round series. The Sharks ultimately proved triumphant, beating the Avalanche 3-2.
The game was intense and much of the pace dictated by close calls and injuries, but captain Joe Pavelski’s fairytale return was the story of the night. The Sharks’ captain was back in the lineup for the first time since Game Seven against the Vegas Golden Knights when he incurred a scary head injury. He opened the scoring in the first period and led his team to victory.

Chomp chomp: the San Jose Sharks won Game Seven of their series against the Vegas Golden Knights in one of the most surprising, eventful, and entertaining comebacks in the Stanley Cup playoff history.
The Sharks were trailing 2-0 entering the third period, lost their captain to injury, then scored four times on the ensuing five-minute powerplay to take things to overtime. Ultimately last year’s Stanley Cup runner-ups exited in the first round.
Knights’ head coach Gerrard Gallant said that this particular loss was worse than losing in the Stanley Cup Final, while Sharks’ head coach Peter DeBoer said it was “the craziest game I’ve ever seen.” Both coaches are right.

San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton will have to sit out one playoff game after being suspended for an illegal check to the head by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.
The hit came during Game Three of the Sharks series verses the Vegas Golden Knights.

Hockey players are notoriously crazy. That was on full display last night during the San Jose Sharks Game One against the Vegas Golden Knights.
In the first period, Joe Pavelski scored a goal off a Brent Burns bomb-shot, but it happened to be redirected with his jaw. The Sharks captain quickly left the ice, missed nearly nine minutes of play, came back with a full visor and shield, and finished the game. The Sharks ended up winning 5-2.
Talk about toughness.

The Washington Capitals answered their horrendous performance in Columbus with a much better effort in San Jose, taking down the Sharks 5-1. The team started off the western swing portion of their six game road trip in a good way.
The Caps out-shot the Sharks 29 to 26.
