Comeback! Caps beats Sharks 5-4 in overtime

The Washington Capitals couldn’t quite put it together for a Sunday matinee against the San Jose Sharks, but a late-game scramble salvaged the day for a dramatic overtime win.

After a scoreless first period, goals got busy in the second period. Nic Dowd finished off a sweet sequence, and Jakub Vrana roofed a pass from TJ Oshie — but the Sharks earned three goals and a hat trick to take a 3-2 lead after forty minutes.

The Caps had some good looks in the third period, but Logan Couture extended the Sharks league with an empty-netter, but then the Caps came back. Jakub Vrana got a wristshot goal for his second of the game, and Oshie tied it with 14 seconds remaining. In a wild overtime, Lars Eller won it.

Late-night feeding frenzy: Caps beat Sharks 5-2

For the first fifteen minutes of Tuesday’s late-night game in San Jose, the Capitals seemed a bit rusty. But once the fourth line starting crashing the net, the flood gates opened. This was a clinic.

Melker Karlsson outraced Radko Gudas to put the Sharks up early in the first, but the Caps came back harder. Garnet Hathaway got one up close, then Jakub Vrana exploited some lazy defense, then John Carlson released a danger-close slapshot to make 3-1 after twenty minutes.

Hathaway scored his second goal of the game in the second period, taking a pass from Nic Dowd and paying the price for it. Jakub Vrana got jealous, so he scored his second goal of the game before intermission, making it 5-1 after two periods.

The Sharks pulled Martin Jones for the third period. The Sharks got one more past Holtby, but that was that.
