The game started off with a slow paced first period ending in 0-0, despite some impressive hustle and penalty kill skills. The Caps finish the period with 4 shots to San Jose’s 9.
The scoring finally began to happen 12:23 into the second period where Joel Ward helped create a stream for Marc-Edouard Vlasic to score. The scoring for San Jose continued about five minutes later, with 17:26 left in the second period. Brent Burns ripped one passed Holtby and the second period ended with the Sharks on top 2-0.
The third period started off with a power play for the Capitals. Brenden Dillion with a holding against Evgeny Kuznetsov, but ending in a no score. With 6:12 left in the third period, the Caps had one more chance for a power play after newbie Kevin Labanc tripped Tom Wilson. The Caps were unsuccessful and Joe Thornton added an empty netter late to seal it.
