Late in Tuesday’s road game in San Jose, Sharks forward Evander Kane put a high hit on Caps defender Radko Gudas. Gudas appeared woozy afterwards, and Kane was eventually ejected from the game.
Update, 11:40 AM: Kane has been fined for elbowing.
Gudas skates along the boards as Kane pulls up alongside. Holding his stick in both hands, Kane hits Gudas in the head with his glove. Gudas’ helmet comes partially off as he collides with the boards in front of the Caps bench.
Kane’s hit does not appear to be a butt-end, wherein he would have hit Gudas with the end of his stick.
Immediately, Alex Ovechkin and other on-ice Caps players approach Kane about the hit. The officials first send Kane to the penalty box before eventually ejecting him entirely.
Supplemental discipline is possible. Kane was suspended earlier this season for shoving an official.
Meanwhile, Gudas was treated by trainers on the bench and then left for the dressing room. After the game, head coach Todd Reirden decline to give a status update, saying Gudas will be re-evaluated o Wednesday.
The Capitals do not have an extra defenseman with them on their current road trip.
The Caps did not score on the ensuing five-minute major power play, but they held on for the 5-2 win.
