The Sharks and Blues entered Game Five of the Western Conference Final tied with two wins apiece. And while the game started off relatively evenly–the Sharks had eleven shots in the first period, but the Blues had one goal on four shots–the Sharks sank pretty quickly after that.
The Blues ended up with twice as many shots as the Sharks (40-21) while the Sharks had six times as many penalty minutes (36-6).
By the end of the game, the Sharks’ bench was six players short: Erik Karlsson, Joe Pavelski, Tomas Hertl, and Joonas Donskoi with injuries, and Micheal Haley and Evander Kane for misconducts.
Halfway through the third period the Sharks even tweeted out a picture of their depleted bench with an emoji version of the sarcastic “this is fine” meme.

It was a mess.
The Blues’ Oskar Sundqvist (who you may remember from Tom Wilson’s preseason suspension) scored in the first, Vladimir Tarasenko scored on a penalty shot in the second, and Jaden Schwartz slammed the door shut with a hat trick. Schwartz now has as many post-season games as he did during the regular season, eleven, with two hat tricks so far.
Miraculously, one–and only one–Blues hat made it to the ice to celebrate.

At one point three Sharks converged on David Perron, so Brayden Schenn casually collared two of them at the same time.

The Sharks won Game Four after referees missed a hand pass which led to the overtime game-winning goal. Sharks fans were less pleased with the refereeing this time around.
#SJSharks fans chanting "Ref You Suck" in the 2019 #StanleyCup Playoffs is the height of self-awareness.

The Blues can close out the series on Tuesday with another win when they return to St. Louis. If the Sharks take that game, the finale will be Thursday, May 23 back in San Jose.
