Capitals point to bad puck luck after losing eighth game in their last 11

The Washington Capitals can’t score on the power play, are getting mediocre goaltending, and have seen their overall shooting percentage fall off a cliff. Those three things have combined to sabotage a hot start where the Capitals spent much of the season leading the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals have fallen to fourth place in the Metro after losing eight of their last 11 games. They are currently in a stretch where they’ve won four games in regulation over their last 19 games. They have only one regulation win in January.

The Capitals tried to explain what was wrong after their latest listless loss, a 4-1 failing against the San Jose Sharks.

Five Capitals players in protocol return for New Year’s Day practice as Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, and Carlson take maintenance days

The Washington Capitals held practice on New Year’s Day and saw the return of five players, who technically remain in COVID-19 protocol.

Dennis Cholowski, Nick Jensen, Justin Schultz, Daniel Sprong, and Vitek Vanecek all took part in the skate, according to the Caps’ Mike Vogel.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of players missing for various reasons.

Lars Eller details his ‘very unhealthy’ 10 days quarantining in an Anaheim hotel room

Washington Capitals center Lars Eller tested positive for COVID-19 while the team was on their West Coast road trip in mid-November. The virus left Eller stranded in Anaheim, California, for over a week as he had to quarantine in a hotel room before being able to return to DC.

The fully vaccinated Eller made the most of his time by getting in some workouts, reading Mark Messier’s book, and binging movies and TV shows.

Lars Eller returns to practice, Connor McMichael likely to sit against Carolina Hurricanes

The Washington Capitals will likely get back one of their missing players during their matinee matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

Lars Eller was a full participant in the Saturday skate, reclaiming his spot on the second line.

Eller has been missing from the lineup since November 16 due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. His return means someone needs to sit and it’s likely that will be Connor McMichael.

The Washington Capitals are in San Jose for one more pair of back-to-back games on the West Coast. And they may see a return of two key veterans tonight against the Sharks.

TJ Oshie and Nic Dowd took the morning skate, and after fully participating in practice on Friday, are game-time decisions per The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir. Daniel Sprong, who suffered a leg injury during Friday’s skate, is healthy and will play.

TJ Oshie takes line rushes, practices fully for first time since injuring foot

The Washington Capitals have endured one injury after another to its forward corps this season. They even freakishly lost Daniel Sprong for a period of time during practice on Friday.

But they did get some good news on the injury front too. TJ Oshie practiced fully for the first time since injuring his foot against the Detroit Red Wings on October 27.

Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette announced that Ilya Samsonov will get the start in net against the Los Angeles Kings, Wednesday, as the team plays its second game in two nights in California.

Tuesday, Vitek Vanecek took the L in the Capitals’ 3-2 overtime defeat to the Anaheim Ducks.

Lars Eller will not play against Anaheim Ducks due to NHL’s COVID-19 protocol

Lars Eller was not on the ice for today’s morning skate before the Washington Capitals take on the Anaheim Ducks and now we know why.

Eller is unavailable for tonight’s game due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. It is not known yet if this will force Eller out of more games after tonight. All we know as of this moment is that he isn’t playing against the Ducks.
