NHL to no longer test asymptomatic players following All-Star break

The National Hockey League is switching things up with their COVID-19 policy again, as The Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman are reporting that the league will no longer test asymptomatic players and staff following the All-Star break, provided Covid-19 rates continue to decline around the league.

The NHL and NHLPA will be meeting on January 31 to discuss any protocol changes. Current league protocols remain in effect until February 3. The All-Star Game occurs on February 5.

John Carlson enters COVID protocol before puck drop against Canucks

The Washington Capitals got some bad news before puck drop Sunday. Defenseman John Carlson entered COVID protocol as the Caps took the ice for warmups.

Nick Jensen will take Carlson’s spot on the first pairing with Martin Fehervary. Meanwhile, Dmitry Orlov will skate with Trevor van Riemsdyk and Matt Irwin will be paired with Justin Schultz.

Schultz will quarterback the Capitals’ power play.

Capitals announce Dmitry Orlov unavailable due to NHL’s COVID-19 protocol

The Washington Capitals announced some bad news during their morning skate Monday. Dmitry Orlov will be unavailable against the Boston Bruins due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.

Orlov to this point was one of only four Capitals skaters to play in all 36 games this season. John Carlson is now the only Capitals’ regular on defense to not end up in COVID protocol this season.

Minnesota Wild will be without 9 players against Capitals including leading scorer Kirill Kaprizov

The Minnesota Wild announced Saturday afternoon that nine of their regular roster members would not play tonight against the Washington Capitals due to either injury or COVID. That list includes Kirill Kaprizov, Jonas Brodin, Joel Eriksson Ek, Alex Goligoski, Jordan Greenway, Nick Bjugstad, Brandon Duhaime, Jared Spurgeon, and Cam Talbot.

The Capitals and Wild are set to do battle at 8 PM in the Xcel Energy Center.

Blues’ leading scorer, Vladimir Tarasenko, lands in COVID protocol ahead of game against Capitals

The St. Louis Blues announced on Thursday afternoon that star forward Vladimir Tarasenko and two others, Scott Perunovich and Jake Walman, were placed into COVID protocol.

The Capitals play the Blues Friday night in the first half of a road back-to-back.

NHL and NHLPA adopting reduced five day COVID isolation time per CDC guidelines

The National Hockey League’s ever-evolving COVID-19 policy has an update. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday that the NHL and the NHLPA have agreed to the possibility of vaccinated individuals leaving isolation five days after a positive COVID test.

This is in line with new CDC guidelines. Players must still have no symptoms or “resolving symptoms”, negative tests, and full clearance from club physicians to exit protocol after the five days.

TJ Oshie spent his birthday and Christmas quarantining away from his family

TJ Oshie’s birthday is two days before Christmas. A perfect storm, in the worst way, caused the Osh Babe to be away from his family, which includes his wife Lauren, three young children, and dog Sandy, for both big celebrations.

On December 19, Oshie became one of the latest Capitals players to enter COVID-19 protocol after the team returned home from a game against the Winnipeg Jets. Since November, the Capitals have seen 13 players be placed on the NHL’s COVID-19 Unavailability List during a span of 42 days. Breakthrough cases have occurred despite every player on the roster being vaccinated by the start of the regular season, according to the team.

Nashville Predators get 6 players back from COVID protocol ahead of Capitals game

NHL teams are still being massively impacted by the surge of COVID-19. That includes the Nashville Predators who are the Capitals’ first opponent after the holiday and COVID-imposed break.

The Predators announced Monday that defenseman Roman Josi and forwards Tommy Novak and Colton Sissons have been added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list. But the club is getting back six other players from quarantine: Mark Borowiecki, Nick Cousins, Mikael Granlund, Ben Harpur, Ryan Johansen, and Philip Tomasino.

Over half of the Capitals starting lineup has entered COVID protocol this season. We haven’t hit the halfway point of 2021-22 yet.

The Washington Capitals have been racked by COVID-19 like almost every other NHL team this season. Nine Capitals players are currently out due to the virus and league-wide, well over 100 players are unavailable. The Capitals added six new players to the list on Monday.

To truly put in perspective how transmissible this virus has been among Capitals players (who are all vaccinated), we put a chart together of the Capitals’ normal starting lineup, but listing only the players’ names who have not entered COVID-19 protocol this season.

COVID-ravaged Capitals make flurry of roster moves as 6 more players enter protocol

The Washington Capitals announced ahead of their return to the ice on Monday that six players are now quarantining after contracting or being exposed to COVID-19 during the NHL’s four-day pause to the season.

Daniel Sprong and Justin Schultz entered protocol on December 21 while Nick Jensen (December 23), Martin Fehervary (December 24), Vitek Vanecek (December 24), and Dennis Cholowski (December 24) were added to the list in the days following.
