The Washington Capitals lost another player to COVID-19 protocol on Sunday.
Michael Sgarbossa, who we privately call Michael Scoarbossa in Discord, will not be doing any scoring any time soon. The center, who was recalled to fill in for a veteran who entered protocol, is now in protocol himself.
The Capitals announced the news minutes before puck drop.
It appears the Capitals COVID-19 issues have potentially worked their way to the Hershey Bears.
According to the Washington Post’s Samantha Pell, Goaltender Zach Fucale, who was recalled by the Caps for their trip to Winnipeg on Friday and then re-assigned back to the AHL on Saturday is now unavailable in Hershey due to protocols.

Over 20 new players were added to the National Hockey League’s COVID-19 protocol list on Tuesday. Multiple games were postponed for the teams most affected. Due to that, the NHL has decided it’s time to be proactive again when it comes to the virus.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the NHL announced to its teams and players that they would be implementing “enhanced protocols” through January 7.

Tuesday marked a watershed moment in the NHL with COVID-19. Twenty-four players (that we know of) ended up in protocol, multiple games were postponed, and players are seriously reconsidering Olympic participation.
The NHL does not make the specific, exact number of positive cases available on its media site anymore so it is difficult to pinpoint if the current bad situation is actually worse. There seems to be a new team announcing unavailable players due to COVID every other hour so it’s clearly a very fluid and ongoing problem.
ESPN’s Emily Kaplan spoke to league officials who say there have been no discussions about pausing the season due to COVID cases.
According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, doctors from the NHL and NHLPA are however having a call tonight to discuss the latest COVID outbreaks and the potential need to enhance protocols.

The Washington Capitals had a scheduled day off from practice today. That break will continue for the first-place Capitals as the team has canceled their practice on Wednesday.
The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reported that the Capitals did so “as a precaution” due to its COVID-19 related issues. He added that no new Capitals players were added to the team’s COVID-19 protocol list today.

The Washington Capitals are currently facing a COVID-19 outbreak on their roster as three players have ended up in COVID protocol during the last week: Nic Dowd, Garnet Hathaway, and Trevor van Riemsdyk. That’s a situation that the Hershey Bears know all too well and are just now beginning to recover from.
Hershey hasn’t played in a game since the 26th of November and is currently scheduled to resume action on December 11 after five games were postponed due to COVID-19 issues.
The able-bodied members of the team and coaching staff returned to practice on Sunday.
