Carl Hagelin makes appearances at Nicklas Backstrom’s pregame ceremony and Washington Wizards game

Carl Hagelin has not played a game for the Washington Capitals since February 28. The fourth line winger suffered a severe left eye injury the next day during the final drill at practice. Hagelin had surgery and has remained out indefinitely.

Nearly three weeks later, Hagelin made his official return to the public on March 26. The Swedish forward, dressed in a suit, could be seen on the Capitals bench during the Capitals’ N1KY pregame ceremony for Nicklas Backstrom. The veteran of 11 NHL seasons was not wearing an eye patch.

Peter Laviolette says Carl Hagelin returning to hockey is ‘secondary right now’

Washington Capitals forward Carl Hagelin suffered a severe eye injury late in a practice in early March. Since then, he has had surgery on his eye that will keep him out indefinitely and general manager Brian MacLellan revealed that the Swedish forward will go under the knife yet again and have a second surgery.

Caps head coach Peter Laviolette spoke about Hagelin’s current status in his morning spot with 106.7 The Fan’s Sports Junkies on Wednesday.

Brian MacLellan says Carl Hagelin will undergo another eye surgery: ‘And then we’ll see what happens after that’

Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan spoke at length with the media on Monday after the NHL’s trade deadline and one of the topics was the health status of Carl Hagelin. Hagelin has been out for almost three weeks after undergoing emergency eye surgery.

When asked if the speedy winger could make his way back to the team this season, MacLellan told The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell that Hagelin is set to go under the knife again.

Capitals call up Axel Jonsson-Fjallby as possible longterm replacement for Carl Hagelin

The Washington Capitals recalled Axel Jonsson-Fjallby from the Hershey Bears and returned goaltender Zach Fucale to the AHL on Friday. Fucale was only with the team on an emergency loan basis due to an injury to Ilya Samsonov.

The move comes after the team placed Carl Hagelin on long-term injured reserve, Joe Snively on regular injured reserve, and activated Anthony Mantha. That left one open spot among the forward group that AJF now occupies.

AJF, a speedy defensive forward, has said in the past that he models his game after Hagelin.

Capitals officially activate Anthony Mantha from LTIR

The Washington Capitals announced late Thursday afternoon that forward Anthony Mantha was activated off of long-term injured reserve.

To make room for Mantha’s return, forward Carl Hagelin was placed on long-term injured reserve and forward Joe Snively was placed on regular injured reserve.

Carl Hagelin out indefinitely after having eye surgery

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan announced Wednesday afternoon that forward Carl Hagelin had surgery on his eye and will be out indefinitely.

MacLellan labeled the injury “serious” and says Hagelin is meeting with another doctor today to discuss the next steps.

Ilya Samsonov gets hurt during practice; Joe Snively, Carl Hagelin miss skate due to injury

The Washington Capitals are a mess. A Caps’ regular has left practice due to injury in consecutive days.

Wednesday, Ilya Samsonov was the latest player to get dinged up during a Peter Laviolette-guided skate. Samsonov absorbed a shot up high and did not return.

Carl Hagelin suffers injury at end of practice

The Washington Capitals lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Monday, marking their sixth straight loss at home. The team took the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex at noon on Tuesday, but things didn’t go much better there.

Carl Hagelin, a critical member of the team’s fourth line, left the ice due to an injury. According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, the Swedish forward “had a towel pressed to his eye area” and there was “total silence among his teammates” after it happened.

Ilya Samsonov to start against Canucks, Dmitry Orlov and Carl Hagelin out of COVID protocol

The Washington Capitals goaltenders have been the talk of the town recently as head coach Peter Laviolette told reporters last week that the team was, “just looking for a little bit more consistency.”

Vitek Vanecek bounced back from a poor outing against the Boston Bruins with a shutout against the New York Islanders. It is now Ilya Samsonov‘s turn to tend the goal as he will get the second half of a back-to-back versus the Vancouver Canucks.

The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell also reports that Dmitry Orlov and Carl Hagelin are both out of COVID protocol and now activated but since they haven’t practiced for a good amount of time, their status is up in the air for tonight’s game.

Alex Ovechkin misses practice with third maintenance day in last two weeks

The Washington Capitals held practice on Tuesday, a day after taking a 7-3 beating by the Boston Bruins.

Captain Alex Ovechkin was absent and took his third maintenance day in the month of January. Other than Carl Hagelin and Dmitry Orlov, who remain out due to COVID protocol, Ovi was the only skater missing, according to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir.
