Nicklas Backstrom is bullish on his future after a whirlwind offseason saw him marry his longtime partner, Liza Berg, and undergo hip resurfacing surgery.

The hip operation was a success and, in a lengthy Swedish-language interview with Expressen’s Magnus Nyström, Backstrom revealed how bad he felt before and just how good he is feeling now.

Nicklas Backstrom: ‘I want to quit on my own terms and not because of injuries’

Every summer, Nicklas Backstrom hands out scholarships, the “Bäckis-stipendiet”, to two young sports stars at his hometown rink in Valbo, Sweden, named NickBack Arena.

On June 10, the Capitals’ star did so again and took questions from Gefle Dagblad’s Daniel Sandström where he spoke extensively in Swedish about his injured hip. Eight days after the interview was published, the Capitals announced that Backstrom went under the knife in Belgium to have a form of hip replacement surgery. The Capitals did not provide a timeline on Backstrom’s return only to say it would be lengthy.

“I want to quit on my own terms and not be forced to quit because of injuries,” Backstrom said then to Gefle Dagblad and translated by RMNB’s Magnus Cadelin. “We’re looking for a solution at the moment and I’m just looking ahead.”

How Carl Hagelin is giving back to his Swedish hometown of Nykvarn

Washington Capitals forward Carl Hagelin is getting into the construction business in his hometown of Nykvarn, Sweden. Swedish newspaper Länstidningen is reporting that he’s in the process of building a padel center.

This might need some explanation.

Nicklas Backstrom getting captain consideration for Swedish Olympic team

Earlier this week, Tre Kronor announced several additions to the Swedish Olympic team this upcoming winter. Former Detroit Red Wings players Niklas Kronwall and Henrik Zetterberg will serve as advisors to head coach Johan Garpenlöv during the tournament taking place in Beijing in February 2022.

The hirings were praised by the Capitals’ Nicklas Bäckström.

Nicklas Backstrom is ‘hungry for revenge’ after failed drug test for allergy medication at 2014 Olympics

Nicklas Bäckström spoke at a press conference held in Stockholm earlier this week and shared his thoughts about the possibility of becoming an Olympic athlete for Team Sweden at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

“I hope and believe it will happen (NHL players in the Olympics). It’s all very special,” Bäckström said according to Aftonbladet after being part of Tre Kronor’s Olympic preparatory gathering. “It would be weird if they took the Olympics away from hockey players. It’s a fun tournament and a memory for life.”

Nicklas Backstrom has a company in Sweden called NickBack Invest AB. Here’s why.

Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, like most Swedish athletes, started and owns his own company. The company, aptly named NickBack Invest AB, is run by Backstrom and his family. It was first formed on July 1, 2010, shortly after Nicklas signed a 10-year, $67 million contract with the Capitals.

Anders, Backstrom’s father, is the chairman while Backstrom’s mom, Catrin, and brother, Kristoffer, are on the company’s board.

So what is NickBack Invest AB and why did Backstrom start it? Here’s why.

David Pastrnak goes inside the glass during Swedish hockey game, conducts interview with wrong player

During Friday’s game of Södertälje and Modo in the Swedish Hockeyallsvenskan league, a special guest popped up between the benches during the first intermission. Boston Bruins star and co-winner of ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy, David Pastrnak, spoke to host Lars Lindberg and analyst Mike Helber. The Czech-speaking Pasta spent two of his junior seasons in Södertälje, prior to beginning his NHL career.

“Södertälje has a big place in my heart, I had some really important years that I spent here and I have several friends still on the team”, Pastrnak said, adding he has a Swedish girlfriend and regularly visits the country.

Then Pasta, perhaps entertaining the idea of a new career when he hangs up his gloves, took over the steering wheel from the announcers.

Axel Jonsson-Fjällby has eight points in first 11 games with Västervik IF, reunites with Davidsson brothers

Capitals prospect Axel Jonsson-Fjällby is spending his offseason playing in Sweden’s second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan league with Västerviks IK. On Wednesday, the club signed AJF’s best friends and former linemates in Djurgården, Marcus and Jonathan Davidsson.

Västervik, usually a bottom feeder, has outperformed expectations and sits in third place after 11 games. They’re 10 points behind Björklöven. The top six teams qualify for a playoff-style race for a promotion to the SHL, the top tier league in Sweden.

AJF and the Davidsson brothers had a breakout season together in the SHL during the 2018/2019 season playing for Djurgården, where, in limited minutes, they produced well from the bottom six. Jonsson-Fjällby had a terrific postseason and scored 12 points in 19 games, only outmatched among forwards by veteran Dick Axelsson.

Nicklas Backstrom on Capitals’ signing of Henrik Lundqvist: ‘This is a world class goalie who plays with fire and is an incredible professional’

The Washington Capitals signed Henrik Lundqvist to a one year, $1.5 million deal last week. The future Hall of Fame goaltender is hoping for his Ray Bourque moment in Washington, after being unable to get over the hump for 15 years in New York.

Recently, Nicklas Backstrom and Carl Hagelin shared their thoughts on Hank’s signing to several Swedish publications. Both players have been Lundqvist’s teammate before and were really excited to have him in Washington.
