Braden Holtby, Capitals fourth-line make appearance at Garnet Hathaway beer release for ‘Hath’s Hazy’

Following in the footsteps of Capitals alumni Craig Laughlin and Alan May, Garnet Hathaway released his own beer on Monday. And the fourth-line winger got the support from a litany of current and former Caps during a release party.

Earlier in the year, Hathaway partnered with Other Half Brewing to create Hath’s Hazy. The sales benefit DMV first responders – a cause near and dear to Hathaway’s heart.

Carl Hagelin out indefinitely due to injury unrelated to eye

Carl Hagelin’s hockey future has encountered another roadblock. The fourth-line winger is now scuffling through a major injury unrelated to his eye.

Hagelin did not take the ice for the Capitals’ fitness test on the first day of Training Camp, Thursday. It’s unclear when he’ll join the team out on the ice.

Carl Hagelin takes ice in regular practice jersey at most heavily attended informal skate yet

The Washington Capitals held their most heavily attended preseason informal skate at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Thursday. Over a dozen NHL regulars attended and participated in various drills.

One very notable partaker in the action was winger Carl Hagelin. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reports that the veteran Swede took part in the skate wearing a normal white practice jersey instead of the light blue one he donned previously. That light blue sweater has in the past denoted a player rehabbing an injury a la defenseman Alexander Alexeyev who is still skating in his after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Brett Connolly joins highly attended Capitals’ informal skate

With Capitals’ Training Camp set to open next month, players are trickling back to the area and are beginning to ramp up their on-ice workouts.

Friday, a large group of Capitals and a former member of the 2018 Stanley Cup team held an informal skate at Capitals MedStar Iceplex according to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir. The group spent their time doing some “intense” drill work.

A decision on Carl Hagelin’s future will wait until August

We know that the Washington Capitals will start the season without two key players due to longterm injuries: Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson. But the future of another player, fourth-line winger Carl Hagelin, is more up in the air.

Hagelin has not played since a February 28 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs due to an errant high stick he took the following day during Capitals practice. A teammate’s stick blade ruptured the choroid in the back of Hagelin’s left eye, forcing him to undergo two surgeries to try and repair the issue. Hagelin said on Breakdown Day in May that his vision will never return to 100 percent.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan was asked about Hagelin’s offseason progress during a press conference ahead of the NHL Draft and free agency.

Carl Hagelin will never get 100 percent vision back after almost losing left eye, plans on playing next season

Carl Hagelin had quite a tragic end to his season that will have unfortunate long-term effects on his life due to an eye injury he suffered at the end of a March 1 practice. The Swedish forward revealed the news to reporters at this year’s Breakdown Day.

According to Hagelin, an errant stick blade ruptured the choroid in the back of his left eye. Hagelin’s vision will never be the same.

Carl Hagelin makes progress in recovery as he skates in pads post-practice but is still ‘not close’ to returning

Injured winger Carl Hagelin was back on the ice again Sunday as he continues to make progress in his recovery from multiple eye surgeries.

Hagelin continued his work with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish after the Capitals’ optional practice ended, this time skating with pads as well as a full helmet bubble. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir posted video.

Carl Hagelin skates with strength and conditioning coach in Florida as he works his way back from scary eye injury

Carl Hagelin took to the ice on Wednesday as he continues to rehab from a serious eye injury that required multiple surgeries.

Hagelin worked with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish after Capitals practice ended, skating in no pads and wearing a helmet bubble. This marks what is believed to be the first time Hagelin has skated since the surgeries. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir posted video.

Carl Hagelin joins Capitals for team photo

Carl Hagelin hasn’t played in a game or practiced with the Capitals since suffering a severe injury to his left eye on March 1. A friendly fire high stick from a teammate caused the Swedish forward to have two surgeries. “And then we’ll see what happens after that,” Brian MacLellan said a little over a month ago.

“[W]e’re hopeful that everything – with regard to his vision and the rest of his life and the game of life, that’s the most important thing,” Peter Laviolette added. “Such a great person in our room and a great player, we certainly miss him. But that’s kind of secondary right now to what he’s dealing with and so hopefully things stay positive. There’s been some good signs and some good news in there but he still has more work to do with regard to the eye.”

Monday, the Swedish forward returned to the ice for what may very well be the first time since getting injured. Hagelin joined his teammates for the Capitals’ 2021-22 team photo.

His flow remains as good as ever.
