Former Capitals forward Brett Connolly was back at Capital One Arena for the first time on Wednesday since signing as a free agent with the Florida Panthers on July 1.
As has become tradition, the Capitals aired a heartwarming tribute video for Connolly during the first TV timeout of the game.

Former Capital Brett Connolly said before the game that “once Willie hits me one time I think that’ll be it. Then it’ll be on so it’s going to be fun.”
Instead, Connolly got mugged by Alex Ovechkin in front of the Caps bench towards the end of the period.
Brett Connolly said coming into his first game against his former team that the first 20 minutes would be “weird.”
He got over it quickly.
Connolly scored his sixth goal of the season 14:26 into the first period to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. It came off a sick deflection.

The Washington Capitals take on the Florida Panthers at BB&T Center Thursday night. The game marks the Capitals’ first game since Sunday and their first in the state of Florida this season. It also marks the team’s first game against former teammate Brett Connolly.
Connolly left Washington over the summer after notching 22 goals, 24 assists, and 46 points — all career highs — from the Capitals’ third line. “He thanked me, and I thanked him,” Connolly told The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir of his exit interview with Brian MacLellan. “And we just kinda left it that.
“I knew, which kinda sucked.”
Weeks later, Connolly signed a four-year, $14 million deal with Florida on July 1, a deal too rich for the salary-cap strapped Capitals to match.

Months after being in a video with lines of a white powdery substance, Evgeny Kuznetsov was suspended four years by the IIHF on Friday after testing positive for cocaine. Kuznetsov, who will not be able to play internationally until June 2023 and could face punishment from the NHL, said in a Capitals statement that “I feel absolutely terrible for letting you down. I realize that the only way I can win you back is to take ownership of my situation and my actions from this point forward.”
