Galentine’s Day gut check: Caps win 3-2

The Caps had two stinkers against the Isles and Flyers and hoped to rebound against the high-flying Colorado Avalanche. How’d they do? Let’s talk about it.

Andre Burakovsky now has a career-high in goals thanks to his opening period tally. Mikko Rantanen scored an absolute dart after a TJ Oshie o-zone penalty. Nicklas Backstrom smacked home a beautiful back-door feed to cut the lead in half. The Caps had roughly a gajillion power plays and then FINALLY Tom Wilson tipped one home in front. Then TJ Oshie deflected a beautiful Nick Jensen shot to give the Caps the lead with two minutes remaining. They did not relinquish it.

USWNT’s Kelley O’Hara chugs beer on camera, says Capitals are her new favorite hockey team

During Saturday night’s beatdown of the Vegas Golden Knights, many of you might’ve noticed a familiar face in the crowd.

Kelley O’Hara of the World Cup-winning US Women’s National Soccer Team was in attendance at the Capitals-Golden Knights game and is now officially a Capitals fan.

Victory from the jaws of defeat: Caps beat Panthers 5-4 (OT)

The Caps have been on a five-game winning streak. The Panthers have put together a mini-streak of their own with two straight dubs. The sun had to set on one team in Sunrise tonight. Let’s get into it.

~~Thomas Jefferson Oshie~~ John Carlson scored 25 seconds into the game off a bouncing puck that looked like it hit everyone on its way past Sergei Bobrovsky. Frank Vatrano answered right back because why not, we love a breakneck first few minutes. Then the Caps cooled down. After some prolonged zone-time, Brett Connolly gave Florida the lead off a deflected Anton Stralman shot because of course he did. Sasha Barkov slapped the bejeezus out of a one-timer to start the second, but the Caps got a gift on the power-play thanks to Alex Ovechkin. Ovi got his second off a funky deflection in front, and then the Caps got two more penalties and Evgenii Dadonov gave Florida the lead back. Tom Wilson provided a fly-by deflection to tie it again, we got overtime, and Willy put the team on his back to get the game-winner.

Caught in an Avalanche: Avs beat Caps 6-3

The Colorado Avalanche stormed into Capital One Arena without a loss. It marked both Andre Burakovsky’s first game back and Phillipp Grubauer’s first start against his former squad. How’d the two teams fare? Glad you asked.

Erik Johnson ripped one past Braden Holtby three minutes into the game. Nikita Zadorov got his first point against the Caps with a spin-o-rama goal. Nazem Kadri caught Holtby sleeping to make it 3-0, and Ilya Samsonov came on in relief. He didn’t fare any better, and Mikko Rantanen potted one on the power-play. Lars Eller gave the Caps some life in the second period, and TJ Oshie added a cheeky back-hand to cut Colorado’s lead to two. But it was all for naught, as Colin Wilson snuck one in off a bad Samsonov turnover. Ovi pounded one in from the blueline, and John Carlson pinged one in 15 seconds later but that was offsides. Nathan MacKinnon quashed the comeback with an empty-netter. Yech.

The Washington Mystics just won their first WNBA title

The Washington Mystics have just won their first WNBA title. The game was an incredibly close battle. It was fast-paced, the lead was passed back and forth, and the building was rocking.

After losing the finals last year, and the addition of Emma Meesseman (who was nothing short of a total beast and won the final’s MVP award), the Mystics won Game 5 and clinched the title. We love a Game 5 title-clinching win. This is the first WNBA title for Coach Mike Thibault (the winningest coach in league history) and league MVP Elena Delle Donne.

Tom Wilson attends Washington Mystics semifinal playoff game

After spending his afternoon at Fort Dupont with Ivanka Trump promoting President Trump’s National Youth Sports Strategy, Tom Wilson spent his evening with more of the DC faithful.

At the Entertainment and Sports Arena Thursday night, Wilson was in the house, along with Wizards stars Bradley Beal and John Wall, to support the Washington Mystics in their quest for their first WNBA championship in franchise history.

The Mystics have clinched the first overall seed in playoffs, are favorites to win WNBA championship

Last year, the Washington Mystics made the WNBA finals but were swept by the Seattle Storm.

This season, there’s a chance we could get another summer, or more precisely fall, of Ted, as the Mystics clinched the first overall seed in the WNBA playoffs and home-court advantage throughout.

PWHPA announce Unifor and Budweiser as sponsors of Toronto Dream Gap Tour

Last week, the PWHPA announced they will kick off The Dream Gap Tour, a series of tournament-style showcases across Canada and the United States.

The showcases are gaining momentum, as Unifor, the largest private-sector trade union in Canada was announced as the title sponsor for the Toronto leg of the showcase. Budweiser was also named the official beer of the PWHPA, the association announced in a press release.

PWHPA announces Dream Gap Tour for upcoming season

Back in May, more than 200 of the world’s best female hockey players announced that they would not play in an American hockey league during the upcoming season. The holdout is due to the CWHL shuttering and players’ dissatisfaction with the NWHL’s business model.

Those players, under the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association, have now announced a slate of tournaments and games they will play in the upcoming season. Dubbed The Dream Gap Tour, the showcases will take place in Toronto from September 20-22; Hudson, New Hampshire, from October 4–6; and Chicago, Illinois, from October 18–20.

RMNB takes on USWNT vs England in the Women’s World Cup

We know we’re supposed to be a hockey blog focused on the Washington Capitals.

But right now, the US Women’s National Team is headed into the semifinal of the Women’s World Cup where they’ll be looking to hand England their biggest loss since 1776 and punch their ticket to their fourth World Cup win.
