The Washington Mystics just won their first WNBA title

The Washington Mystics have just won their first WNBA title. The game was an incredibly close battle. It was fast-paced, the lead was passed back and forth, and the building was rocking.

After losing the finals last year, and the addition of Emma Meesseman (who was nothing short of a total beast and won the final’s MVP award), the Mystics won Game 5 and clinched the title. We love a Game 5 title-clinching win. This is the first WNBA title for Coach Mike Thibault (the winningest coach in league history) and league MVP Elena Delle Donne.

Back in attendance? John Wall and Bradley Beal. Beal mentioned that he had to get permission from Coach because the team is right now…in New York gearing up to play the Knicks tomorrow.

But, don’t worry. The Wizards were still sporting their Mystics jerseys while they traveled.

Also showing support for the Mystics? None other than the Capitals’ lovely Captain…Alex Ovechkin!

This team of girls is so, so special. Emma Meesseman, who didn’t play for the Mystics last season while she was playing abroad, was told by head coach Mike Thibault she was the missing piece. She just won Finals MVP, and is the first bench player to do so.

Speaking of head coach Thibault, he is not only the winningest coach in WNBA history, but he also coached the Connecticut Sun, the Mystics opponent. He had not won a championship until now.

Plus, local legend Kristi Toliver now has her second WNBA championship. She is one of five Maryland Terrapins to play in this WNBA finals, the most of any school.

Finally, league MVP Elena Delle Donne. She finished the game with 21 points while battling an injured knee, a broken nose, and THREE herniated discs in her back. THREE.

But, you don’t need to hear it from us. We plugged this story a few days ago, but read Bradley Beal’s post for the Players’ Tribune. They have been nothing short of an absolute blast to watch and we can’t wait for this sport to grow. Congrats to the Mystics!
