Former Capitals head coach Barry Trotz was fired by the New York Islanders on Monday after four seasons on Long Island. Trotz guided the Islanders to three consecutive playoff appearances, including two visits to the Eastern Conference Final, before missing the big dance for the first time this season with the team.
Trotz’s first destination after being canned was his former home in Washington DC.
The Washington Capitals are one step closer to hosting some fans at Capital One Arena this season.
On Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted a number of pandemic restrictions in Washington DC. During her press conference, Bowser also revealed that that sports teams in the district can apply to begin hosting fans after March 22.
The timing comes less than three weeks before the Washington Nationals’ season opener on April 1 against the New York Mets.

The Washington Mystics revealed the design of their championship rings on social media, Sunday night, and they’re tremendous.
The rings feature the Mystics’ alternate DC logo in blue and red stones overlaid atop the WNBA championship trophy.
According to Jostens, each ring has an average of 120 diamonds, 6 custom-cut and 29 taper-cut rubies totaling 3.5 carats. There are also 6 custom-cut sapphires, 1 round sapphire, and 16 princess-cut sapphires, which combined total 3.15 carats. The rings have an astounding total gem carat weight of 9.0 carats.
Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics players participated in a Juneteenth march Friday morning spanning Capital One Arena to the Martin Luther King, Jr, Memorial. Wearing Black Lives Matter shirts and holding a Together We Stand banner, the players, including John Wall and Natasha Cloud, chanted things like No justice. No peace. No racist police. as a throng of supporters marched behind them.
Before the march began, the Wizards’ Bradley Beal, the team’s superstar shooting guard, took a mic and shared a scary interaction he had with DC police where he was racially profiled.

Monumental Sports & Entertainment — the same company that owns the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics — announced several new initiatives and investments to address police brutality and fight for social justice on Thursday. The news comes nearly a month after George Floyd’s senseless murder due to police brutality in Minneapolis that spurred national protests and inspired many athletes and NHL players to speak out against racism.
“Sports have a significant impact on the day-to-day life of any great community, and I believe that owning teams is a public trust,” Ted Leonsis said in a release. “My goal is for our organization to serve as a unifying force for good – I believe this is part of our social responsibility, which we all take seriously at MSE. Core to our mission is inspiring all employees, stakeholders, and our community to ‘leave more than we take.’ So, I am proud to announce today our first set of initiatives, actions, and investments to do our part in calling out abuses of power from law enforcement in our community and committing to the deep, focused and long-term work on fighting social injustice.”
The most noteworthy part of the release includes the announcement of a march led by players from the Wizards and the WNBA’s defending-champion Mystics on Juneteenth – an unofficial American holiday to celebrate the emancipation of the remaining slaves in Texas.
Monumental Sports and Entertainment announced on Monday that they are holding a Pride Month auction that will benefit SMYAL, a local nonprofit that has empowers LGBTQ youth. The auction begins on June 18, 2020, at 12 PM and ends on June 26, 2020, at 3 PM.
The Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and Washington Mystics all contributed items.
A year after the Stanley Cup-winning Washington Capitals became the first team to be inducted into the DC Sports Hall of Fame, the 2019 championship teams from the Washington Nationals and Washington Mystics will receive the same honor as Teams Of Distinction.
The news was announced in a release Tuesday morning from the DC Sports Hall of Fame.
Monumental Sports and Entertainment have released new Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics shirts inspired by the coronavirus pandemic.
A Washington Capitals shirt has the team’s logo on it, but instead replaces Washington with Wash Your Hands while a Wizards’ shirt design cleverly depicts two hands washing themselves in the d portion of the logo. A Mystics shirt says We’ll Always Be Together.
A year after honoring the Washington Capitals with a commemorative SmarTrip card (that we helped create), WMATA is doing the same for the Washington Nationals.
The Nationals’ World Series Champion SmarTrip cards are available for $10 and come preloaded with $8 worth of Metro fare. As with all SmarTrip cards, Metro charges $2 to to cover the cost of production.
Just like they did with the Washington Capitals, the Washington Nationals will honor at Nats Park another one of the local teams that recently won a championship.
Monday, the Nats announced that the WNBA champion Washington Mystics will be on the field for pregame festivities ahead of Game Four of the NLCS. WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne will throw out the first pitch.
