Elena Delle Donne helped lead the Washington Mystics to their first WNBA championship on Thursday after scoring 21 points during Game Five. The power forward did so despite having an injured knee, a broken nose, and three herniated discs in her back.
After a champagne-soaked celebration inside the locker room after the win, Delle Donne took the championship trophy home, where she slept with it in her bed.
Delle Donne’s wife Amanda Clifton took the photo.
“Goodnight to my champion,” Clifton wrote.
The photo emulates a photo of Alex Ovechkin that Nastya Ovechkina took in June 2018 after the Capitals won their first championship. Alex Ovechkin had a house party with the Caps Russians, along with their family and friends. At the end of the night, Ovi slept with the Stanley Cup in his bed.
The Washington Mystics received congratulations from many national figures on Friday including Barack Obama and LeBron James.
