Monumental Sports Network, formerly NBC Sports Washington, to officially debut September 20

The broadcast home of the Washington Capitals is about to debut a new look.

Monumental Sports Network will formally launch on Wednesday, completing a rebrand of NBC Sports Washington that was announced earlier this summer.

Besides broadcasting Capitals games, Monumental Sports Network also holds the TV rights for the Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, and various other local teams. Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) fully acquired NBCSWSH last September.

Capitals broadcasters Joe Beninati, Craig Laughlin, Alan May, and Alexa Landestoy all win Emmys

NBC Sports Washington (which is becoming Monumental Sports Network in the fall) took home some hardware at the 65th Capital Emmy Awards. Joe Beninati won two Emmys Saturday night for his outstanding work as the Capitals play-by-play announcer, including an individual award for Best Sports Play-by-Play.

With this year’s victory, Beninati has now won the Best Sports Play-by-Play award for 10 straight years and 17 times overall. He’s received around two dozen Emmys over his stellar career in DC and was the 2020 Board of Governors Award honoree.

Beninati wasn’t the only winner on the Capitals’ broadcast team. Color commentator Craig Laughlin, host Alexa Landestoy, and analyst Alan May all also received Capital Emmys for their work covering the Caps.

NBC Sports Washington will officially rebrand as Monumental Sports Network in September

Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced on Wednesday that they will be rebranding their regional sports network NBC Sports Washington as Monumental Sports Network starting this coming September.

MSE fully acquired NBC Sports Washington, the TV rights holder of Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and Washington Mystics games, last year. At the time of the acquisition, the company majority owned by Ted Leonsis, announced that this rebrand would arrive for the 2023-24 season.

The rebrand is the first tangible step taken by MSE to build their own powerful streaming platform that will give them the ability to shape the primary coverage of their own sports teams.

NBC Sports Washington to air Hershey Bears’ Calder Cup Finals games

The Hershey Bears are just four wins away from a championship. In further great news, you’ll be able to follow along on TV as they look to take down the Coachella Valley Firebirds and secure their AHL-record 12th Calder Cup.

Beginning Thursday night, NBC Sports Washington will air all of Hershey’s Calder Cup Finals games against the Firebirds.

The Bears will start on the road in California for two games before returning to Giant Center for Game Three. Game One begins at 10 pm ET Thursday.

NBC Sports Washington to air Hershey Bears’ playoff games

For those wanting to watch the Hershey Bears in the playoffs, your wish has finally been granted.

Beginning Thursday night, NBC Sports Washington will air all of Hershey’s remaining Eastern Conference Finals games against the Rochester Americans.

The Bears currently face a 1-0 series deficit after falling 5-1 to the Amerks in Game One. Game Two begins at 7 pm tomorrow.

MSE completes acquisition of NBC Sports Washington, network re-brand set for 2023-24 seasons

Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced on Tuesday the closing of its acquisition of NBCUniversal’s stake in NBC Sports Washington from Comcast Corporation. The closure means MSE has fully acquired NBC Sports Washington — the TV rights holder of Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards games. MSE is majority owned by Ted Leonsis.

MSE previously held just 33 percent of the media company after first buying-in six years ago. The specific financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

As reported back in late August, the purchase now gives MSE the option of building a potential powerful streaming platform and more power to shape the primary coverage of its own sports teams.

NBC Sports Washington to air 69 regular-season Capitals games this year

NBC Sports Washington, which may soon be re-branded, had its TV schedule for the 2022-23 season announced by the Capitals, Monday.

The local sports channel will air 69 regular-season Capitals’ games next season as well as four Caps’ preseason games. Their slate of coverage begins on Sunday, September 25, as the Capitals take on the Buffalo Sabres in an exhibition at Capital One Arena.

Thirteen Capitals games will air on national TV, including their home opener against the Boston Bruins (TNT).

Ted Leonsis’s MSE becomes sole owner of NBC Sports Washington

Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced on Tuesday that they reached a deal with the Comcast Corporation to fully acquire NBC Sports Washington — the TV rights holder of Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards games. MSE is majority owned by Ted Leonsis.

MSE fully acquired NBCSWSH by purchasing NBCUniversal’s 67% stake. MSE previously held 33 percent of the media company after first buying in six years ago. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The purchase now gives MSE the option of building a potential powerful streaming platform and more power to shape the primary coverage of its own sports teams.

John Walton to fill in for a sick Joe Beninati, team up with Craig Laughlin during Game Six broadcast

Longtime NBC Sports Washington play-by-play man, Joe Beninati, will miss tonight’s telecast due to illness. A source confirmed to RMNB that Capitals Radio’s John Walton will take the reins and fill in with Beninati feeling under the weather. Zack Fisch will slide over to Walton’s spot on the radio broadcast with the Hershey Bears eliminated from the postseason.

The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir was the first to report the news.

Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin are covering road games in person again after nearly two years away due to the pandemic

Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin hit the road on Tuesday and called an away game in person for the first time since a pre-pandemic Capitals-Sabres matchup on March 9, 2020.

The NBC Sports Washington commentary duo threw on their headsets and called the Capitals’ 4-1 victory over the Nashville Predators from the top of Bridgestone Arena. The span between calling live road games was 708 days.

It was a big moment for the crew.
