Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin celebrate 25 years together as Capitals ‘simply sensational’ play-by-play duo

For a generation of Capitals fans, Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin calling Capitals games is all they know.

Saturday, the NBC Sports Washington play-by-play duo will celebrate their 25th anniversary together as the Capitals take on the Flyers at Capital One Arena.

“It’s the friendship that you have off-air that generates the on-air,” Laughlin said in a video produced by NBCSWSH. “I consider Joe to be one of my best friends, but it all starts because we are indeed an odd couple.”

“I love him like a brother,” Beninati added, “but he lives for my pain.”

They are currently the longest-tenured broadcast duo in the NHL.

Full TV schedule released: NBC Sports Washington will air only 69 Capitals games this season

The Washington Capitals just announced NBC Sports Washington’s regional schedule for Caps games. Combined with the new rights packages the NHL signed with ESPN and Turner Sports, watching games will be a little more complicated for Capitals fans than in past seasons.

NBC Sports Washington will air 69 games locally during the regular season (and four of six preseason games). Thirteen Capitals games will air on national TV.

Karl Alzner endures power outage during first game as NBC Sports Washington analyst: ‘It was eventful’

Karl Alzner made his debut as an analyst for NBC Sports Washington on Tuesday. Alzner’s appearance was widely praised on social media by fans. His presence buoys an already deep roster of articulate former Caps on the pre and postgame shows including Alan May and Brent Johnson.

But the night did have its challenges. Multiple actually.

“It was eventful,” Alzner said in NBCSWSH’s Capitals Talk podcast.

Karl Alzner joins NBC Sports Washington’s pregame show

NBC Sports Washington has a special treat for Capitals fans tonight.

Karl Alzner will be joining the pregame show ahead of the second showdown between division rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“Excited to get on the action today with the #caps pregame show @NBCSCapitals,” Alzner tweeted on Tuesday.

Mass layoffs at NBC Sports include local personalities Michael Jenkins and Rob Carlin

Bad news out of Bethesda.

Regional sports network NBC Sports Washington has reportedly laid off lots of on-air and off-air staff this week. Beloved long-time anchor Michael Jenkins was the first to break the news that he has been laid off on Monday. Later, fellow The Daily Line contributor Sara Perlman said her goodbyes.

By Wednesday night, we learned that longtime host Rob Carlin has also been dismissed.

How local broadcasters like Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin are calling Capitals’ playoff games from outside the bubble

The Washington Capitals’ first round-robin game of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs will be aired on NBC Sports Washington and Capitals Radio — like usual. But the coronavirus pandemic has changed practically everything else.

First off, none of the broadcasts will happen on location from inside the bubble. Descriptions and analysis will be coming from watching a live feed of the games from nearby monitors. There will be no crowds, only piped-in crowd noise.

Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin will call the game from NBC Sports Washington’s studio in Bethesda, Maryland. Rob Carlin will host the pre- and post-game shows from a different room at NBCSWSH headquarters, while Alan May provides color from inside his bedroom studio in Georgetown. May added it’s “where all of the magic happens,” which I think is in reference to his great analysis.

Source: NBC Sports Washington to air Washington Capitals games in the round robin and first round

Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin’s season is not over quite yet.

According to a source who asked not to be named, NBC Sports Washington will air Washington Capitals games in the round robin and the first round of the playoffs locally if the NHLPA approves the new CBA and return-to-play protocols. That means Beninati, Laughlin, and analyst Alan May will be back on our televisions for seven to 10 games before handing off to NBC Sports and Sportsnet for national coverage throughout the rest of the postseason.

Matt Bradley, Olie Kolzig, Troy Brouwer, and Bruce Boudreau to give insight in re-airings of memorable Capitals games

The Washington Capitals and NBC Sports Washington announced Monday morning that they will be airing “Greatest Hits” specials featuring cameos from Capitals alumni such as Olie Kolzig, Troy Brouwer, and Bruce Boudreau.

The first memorable game will air tonight featuring analysis and insight from former enforcer Matt Bradley, who is currently working for the Capitals as a scout. NBC Sports Washington will re-air Game Seven of the 2009 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal between the Capitals and New York Rangers.

NBC Sports Washington to air entire 2018 Stanley Cup Final and Capitals Championship Parade on Sunday

NBC Sports Washington’s programming will be extra champion-y on Sunday.

From 9 AM until 9:30 PM, the Capitals’ broadcast partner will air the 2018 Stanley Cup Final between the Caps and the Vegas Golden Knights. Afterward, they will show the full Capitals Championship Parade.
