Jakub Vrana will make his season debut tonight for the Detroit Red Wings: ‘I’m super excited’

Jakub Vrana missed the Detroit Red Wings’ first 56 games of the 2021-22 season. But the talented Czech winger will return for Game 57 against the Arizona Coyotes.

“I am in tonight,” Vrana said after the morning skate Tuesday. “I haven’t played a game in a year. I’m trying to get back to my game-day routine. I’m super excited, you know? That’s all I can say. Huge excitement to join the team again and get back at it tonight.”

Jakub Vrana returns to ice with Red Wings teammates for first time since shoulder surgery

Former Capital Jakub Vrana practiced with the Detroit Red Wings for the first time on Thursday since undergoing shoulder surgery in September.

Vrana wore a blue non-contact jersey and was cleared to shoot the puck.

The Red Wings acquired Vrana and picks from the Capitals for Anthony Mantha at the 2021 trade deadline.

Jakub Vrana hurts shoulder ten minutes into first Red Wings practice

A mid-April trade between the Capitals and Red Wings last season sent Jakub Vrana to Detroit and brought Anthony Mantha to DC. Vrana, who only just returned stateside due to visa issues, was primed to start his first Training Camp with the Red Wings until things quickly veered off track.

Vrana hurt his shoulder only ten minutes into his first practice of the season.

Jakub Vrana believes bigger minutes in Detroit will allow him to show his full potential: It ‘is a lot different than in Washington’

Jakub Vrana signed a three-year deal worth $5.25 million per season with the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Vrana, who spent the previous five years with the Capitals, was sent to the Red Wings in April for Anthony Mantha. The trade was essentially a one-for-one deal that also saw Washington gain cap space by dealing Richard Panik for picks.

The new contract instantly makes Vrana the second-highest paid forward on a young, up-and-coming Red Wings team that has $20 million in cap space per Cap Friendly heading into the 2021-22 season. Vrana, who scored 8 goals in 11 games with Detroit after the trade which included a career-best four-goal game, is now one of the team’s leaders and will be relied upon every night to play big minutes and provide offense — something that wasn’t the case most nights under Peter Laviolette.

Detroit Red Wings sign Jakub Vrana to three-year deal that has lower cap hit than Anthony Mantha

When Brian MacLellan sent Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik (salary dump), and first- and second-round picks to the Detroit Red Wings for forward Anthony Mantha at the trade deadline, the Capitals general manager explained that he made the deal because the young Czech forward was “frustrated” under new head coach Peter Laviolette. There was also another reason.

“He has arbitration rights,” MacLellan said in April. “He’s got some good numbers. Projecting that salary, we get some cost certainty with Mantha. We know what that contract is.”

Fast forward four months later, Vrana, a restricted free agent, just signed a new multi-year deal with the Red Wings. Vrana’s cap hit is worth less than Mantha’s. Meanwhile, the Capitals might need to make a minor trade before the season to have a full 23-man Opening Night roster.

Michal Kempny reunites with former Capital Jakub Vrana at soccer game in Hungary

Two 2018 Stanley Cup champions met up halfway across the world for a soccer game, Wednesday.

Michal Kempny and former Capital Jakub Vrana both attended the Euro 2020 game between Portugal and 2018 World Cup champion France. The game was held at Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary.

The two Czechs took a photo together near the field. “Found him,” wrote Kempny on his Instagram Story.

They weren’t the only sports stars to reunite during the game.

Vitek Vanecek on Jakub Vrana’s trade to Detroit: ‘Both of us have to come to terms with that’

After handing the starting job to Ilya Samsonov and signing future Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist over the offseason, the Capitals had Vitek Vanecek slotted as its third goaltender – likely a fixture on the team’s taxi squad. Instead, after years of being stuck in the minors with no opportunity, Vanecek had one of the most fortunate, chaotic, and gutwrenching seasons of his career.

Before training camp, Lundqvist announced he would miss the season due to open-heart surgery. In January, after starting two of the first three games of the season (1/14, 1/17), Samsonov contracted COVID-19 after hanging out maskless in his hotel room with Evgeny Kuznetsov, Alex Ovechkin, and Dmitry Orlov. The Russian dynamo would not make an NHL start again until February 28 and never truly regained his footing.

That thrust Vanecek immediately into the starting role and he rose to the challenge. The Czech goaltender earned NHL Rookie of the Month honors in January and would finish the year with the seventh-most wins in the NHL (21). Vanecek would enter the playoffs as the Capitals’ starter, but injured himself in Game One making a split save against the Boston Bruins and would finish the year on the IR.

Jakub Vrana scored four goals in the Red Wings’ 7-3 win over the Stars. It was The Snek’s second career hat trick.

In his fourth game as a Red Wing, our son Jakub Vrana has scored a hat trick plus one.

This is the second hat trick of Vrana’s career. His last came against the Calgary Flames in November 2019 when the Nationals invaded Capital One Arena and celebrated their World Series championship.

This is, obviously, The Snek’s first four-goal game.
