Former Capital Daniel Sprong is a 20-goal scorer in a single season for the first time in his NHL career. The Seattle Kraken winger tallied his 20th of the 2022-23 campaign on Thursday when the Kraken took down the Anaheim Ducks 4-1.
The 26-year-old forward is near the end of his second season with Seattle after being dealt west by the Caps at the 2022 trade deadline.

Forward Daniel Sprong scored eight goals for the Washington Capitals before the team traded him to the Seattle Kraken at the deadline. Sprong, 25, slayed it with the Kraken, notching six more goals in sixteen games.
And yet, Seattle did not extend Sprong. On Tuesday we learned Sprong has signed a professional tryout agreement with the team. He’ll have to fight for a contract and a spot on the team.

Daniel Sprong scored six goals in 16 games for the Seattle Kraken after the Washington Capitals dealt him at the trade deadline. That goal-scoring clip was not enough for the Dutchman to earn a qualifying offer and a 10 percent raise ($797k) from the Kraken, a team who scored the fourth-fewest goals in the NHL last season.
Dennis Cholowski, a depth defenseman who was a waiver wire pickup by the Capitals last season (before being reclaimed back by Seattle), also did not receive a qualifying offer from the Kraken. Seattle announced the news on social media before Monday’s 5 PM deadline.
Both players will be unrestricted free agents on Wednesday per the team.
Daniel Sprong now has five goals in thirteen games since he was traded to the Seattle Kraken last month.
His latest marker, scored on Friday, was absolutely handed to him on a silver platter by Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

Daniel Sprong has four goals in eleven games since he was traded to the Seattle Kraken last month. While Sprong’s success may be bittersweet to those who had made massive investments into the player, the way in which he’s scoring should be very familiar.
I mean, just look at this goal. He’s obviously studied under Alex Ovechkin.

Daniel Sprong has played in three games for the Seattle Kraken since being traded by the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline in a deal that saw Marcus Johansson return to DC.

The Capitals dealt Sprong, and two draft picks, to the Kraken for Marcus Johansson ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. Kraken general manager Ron Francis referred to Sprong “as the player [Washington] wanted to give back to us.”

Despite showcasing an electric shot and good speed, Sprong, 25, was a frequent scratch of Peter Laviolette over the last two seasons due to his defense, leading Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan to jettison the forward to his fourth NHL team in six seasons.
“I think there are certain aspects of his game that are inconsistent and that he needs to be more consistent in that area,” MacLellan said diplomatically. “I think the player when you’re not finishing, you get held accountable for those things you’re not accomplishing in that team aspect. I think you can overlook things when goals are being scored and you can’t when they’re not being scored.”
Sprong first found out about the trade while at MedStar Capitals Iceplex with his teammates for an optional practice.

The Washington Capitals have added to their forward depth for the stretch run approximately four hours before the NHL’s March 21 trade deadline. Marcus Johansson will be making his way back to DC as Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan has acquired the Swedish forward back from the Seattle Kraken.
TSN’s Chris Johnston was first to report the trade interest this morning and the first on the official confirmation.
The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell had the details on the return for Seattle which includes Daniel Sprong and draft picks. Johnston has the draft picks as a 2022 fourth-round selection and a 2023 sixth-round selection. The Kraken will also be retaining 50-percent of Johansson’s contract.

The Washington Capitals were back practicing at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday for the first time since returning from their western Canadian road trip. Unfortunately, the team had to leave Lars Eller in Vancouver after the Danish center landed in COVID-19 protocol.
That news means Eller is now out for an unknown period of time so head coach Peter Laviolette had to make some adjustments to his lineup at practice.
