Report: Capitals tried to extend Conor Sheary earlier in the offseason

The Washington Capitals are entering an important time period that could reshape the franchise during the final years of the Alex Ovechkin Era in DC. The NHL Draft, where the team could make a trade, is on July 7 and 8, and free agency opens on July 13.

The Capitals, who have not won a playoff series since lifting the Stanley Cup in 2018, will have approximately $25 million to play with after second-line center Nicklas Backstrom had a second hip surgery last month that few athletes have returned from.

Now, Elliotte Friedman is reporting one of the Capitals’ first major moves of the offseason.

Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan tried to re-up 30-year-old, third-line winger, Conor Sheary, who will be an unrestricted free agent next year.

Ilya Samsonov to get second-straight start in net, Conor Sheary misses out against Penguins due to non-COVID illness

Saturday, the Washington Capitals kick off the first half of back-to-back afternoon games with a matchup against their forever rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to Mike Vogel, former Pens player Conor Sheary did not make the trip up to Pittsburgh and will miss out due to a non-COVID illness. Vogs also reports that goaltender Ilya Samsonov will get his second-straight start after beating the Tampa Bay Lightning in his last appearance.

Conor Sheary misses practice with non-COVID illness, Garnet Hathaway returns to ice and skates with top line

Friday, the Washington Capitals hit the practice ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex for the first time since they secured a big two points at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Caps are preparing for back-to-back afternoon games this weekend against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins.

Before practice, the team told The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell that forward Conor Sheary would miss the skate with a non-COVID illness. Meanwhile, forward Garnet Hathaway returns from an identical situation that saw him miss the game against the Lightning.

Peter Laviolette tinkers with lines again ahead of Lightning game

The Washington Capitals practiced Tuesday for the second straight day before they’re set to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning. Wednesday night’s game will be the Caps’ first since getting beat up on home ice by the Minnesota Wild 5-1.

After the big loss to the Wild, head coach Peter Laviolette put his forward lines into a blender at Monday’s practice. It looks like he has decided to do that again Tuesday as the team tries to find the right fits among the forward group.

The bananas history surrounding Conor Sheary’s empty-net goal against Columbus

Usually, it’s Alex Ovechkin making history. But Thursday, Conor Sheary made some of his own.

The Capitals’ Short King scored an empty-net goal with 12:39 remaining in the third period against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

According to SportsRadar and via an NBC Sports Washington article, Sheary’s uncontested goal was “the second-earliest empty netter scored in a third period in NHL history.”

Conor Sheary promoted to top line, Vitek Vanecek to start against Canucks

The Washington Capitals will finish off their western Canadian road trip on Friday with a visit to Vancouver against Bruce Boudreau’s Canucks. Vancouver beat the Capitals 4-2 in DC back on January 16. The Capitals are 1-0-1 after trips in Calgary and Edmonton.

The Capitals’ lines will mostly stay the same against the Canucks, but there is one notable change. According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, Conor Sheary will see a promotion to the top line alongside Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin. Sheary finished Wednesday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers with the trio.

Capitals host optional skate after Bruins loss, Conor Sheary returns to the ice

The Washington Capitals held an optional practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex after their 4-3 to the Boston Bruins.

Conor Sheary, who had been in COVID protocol, returned to the ice for the first time in six days per The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir.

TJ Oshie does not participate in Capitals’ optional practice, Conor Sheary and John Carlson to miss Bruins game

Washington Capitals forward TJ Oshie suffered an upper-body injury very early in last Saturday’s 2-0 shutout win over the New York Islanders. Oshie would then miss the next day’s game against the Vancouver Canucks and not take the morning skate before Tuesday’s matchup with the Winnipeg Jets.

He returned to the ice for the first time Wednesday morning but did not stick around for the Capitals’ optional practice immediately after.

Lines: Garnet Hathaway skates on top line as TJ Oshie misses morning skate with upper-body injury

The Washington Capitals have had to put their lineup into a blender again as a handful of players are out with injury or are unavailable due to COVID-19 protocol.

TJ Oshie, who missed Sunday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, did not take the morning skate as he continues to recover from an upper-body injury. The same goes for Conor Sheary and John Carlson who remain out due to the aforementioned COVID protocol.
