Michal Kempny wins bronze medal with Team Czechia at the 2022 IIHF World Championship

The 2022 IIHF World Championship wrapped up on Sunday with Finland taking down Canada in the gold medal game. Before that though, Czechia stomped the United States in the bronze medal match. On that Czech team was Washington Capitals defender Michal Kempny.

Kempny skated a team-high 24:11 of ice time in the 8-4 victory that featured a hat trick from Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak. The Czechs scored six goals in the third period alone to fuel their first medal at a Men’s World Championship since 2012.

Martin Fehervary and Michal Kempny both headed to 2022 IIHF World Championship

With the Washington Capitals officially eliminated from playoff contention this year, two players have been freed up to join their international squads for the 2022 IIHF World Championship.

Taking up the offer from their respective countries on Sunday were defensemen Martin Fehervary (Slovakia) and Michal Kempny (Czechia).

This will be both men’s third World Championships.

Michal Kempny’s cosmically bad luck continues as he tries to leave Dallas quarantine

The Capitals’ All-Star Break arrived on Thursday after the team fell 4-3 to the Edmonton Oilers.

But one Capitals player remained stuck in ~~hell~~ the deep south and had trouble getting out due to inclement weather.

Michal Kempny enters COVID protocol after participating in optional morning skate

The Washington Capitals announced Friday afternoon that defenseman Michal Kempny has entered COVID protocol. Taking his roster spot and playing in his second career NHL game will be taxi squad recall Joe Snively.

The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell reports that Kempny took part in a “good chunk” of this morning’s optional skate in Dallas before leaving the ice. Head coach Peter Laviolette told the media after the skate that the Caps were “going through some things in the room.”

Conor Sheary enters COVID protocol before puck drop against Islanders, Michal Kempny called up from taxi squad

The Washington Capitals made a flurry of roster moves before the start of their game against the New York Islanders on Saturday.

The first development came during warmups when the Capitals called up defenseman Michal Kempny from their taxi squad to the main roster on Saturday. The move came as John Carlson and Conor Sheary did not initially join the team out on the ice.

According to The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell, the Caps were waiting on COVID-19 test results to come back on the two players.

Capitals place Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie on injured reserve, re-assign Michal Kempny to taxi squad

The Washington Capitals are in St. Louis to take on the Blues tonight. Before puck drop, they made a few notable roster moves.

Nicklas Backstrom and TJ Oshie, who were both recently sidelined with non-COVID illnesses, have been placed on injured reserve. According to The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell, neither forward traveled with the team for this two-game road trip which features back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.

Michal Kempny tallies an assist, plays over 20 minutes in first NHL game in nearly two years

2018 Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Michal Kempny played in his first regular-season game in the NHL since March 9, 2020, on Wednesday – a span of 660 days.

During that time period, Kempny suffered three consecutive severe injuries to his left leg. The changes in his body and the lengthy time away from the rink zapped the Czech defenseman of his timing and eroded some of his skill, necessitating a start in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears to start the 2021-22 season.

Kempny was called back up to the NHL on Monday after three of the Caps’ regular defensemen entered COVID-19 protocol. His return was both deserving and emotional.

Michal Kempny on his time with the Hershey Bears: ‘It really helped me build my confidence back up’

Defenseman Michal Kempny has not played an NHL regular season game since March 9, 2020.

Since then, the 31-year-old defenseman tore an Achilles tendon, suffered a freak knee injury due to a shovel accident, and was cut by the Capitals out of training camp.

But now, after playing 24 games in the American Hockey League for the Hershey Bears, Kempny is back due to an influx of COVID-related issues among the Capitals defenders.

COVID-ravaged Capitals make flurry of roster moves as 6 more players enter protocol

The Washington Capitals announced ahead of their return to the ice on Monday that six players are now quarantining after contracting or being exposed to COVID-19 during the NHL’s four-day pause to the season.

Daniel Sprong and Justin Schultz entered protocol on December 21 while Nick Jensen (December 23), Martin Fehervary (December 24), Vitek Vanecek (December 24), and Dennis Cholowski (December 24) were added to the list in the days following.
