Marcus Johansson to skate on top line in re-debut with Capitals

The Washington Capitals took the ice Tuesday for their morning skate before their home game against the St. Louis Blues. The team made two trade deadline moves on Monday and The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir reports that one of those additions, Marcus Johansson, will immediately get a top-six role.

Johansson, pronounced YO-hansson again now, will start his second spell with the Caps playing on the first line with Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov.

TJ Oshie to miss Carolina Hurricanes game due to lower-body injury

Pregame, Peter Laviolette said the Capitals were once again “working through things” in the room. Now we know what that is.

TJ Oshie, who left Thursday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a lower-body injury, will not play against the Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes tonight.

The Capitals’ Mike Vogel first reported the news on Twitter. Mike Vecchione, who was called up earlier in the week from Hershey, will replace Oshie in the lineup. It’ll be Vecchione’s first game as a Capital and his first in the NHL since April 9, 2017.

Connor McMichael replaces Lars Eller (protocol) at center, Daniel Sprong returns to lineup

The Washington Capitals were back practicing at MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Monday for the first time since returning from their western Canadian road trip. Unfortunately, the team had to leave Lars Eller in Vancouver after the Danish center landed in COVID-19 protocol.

That news means Eller is now out for an unknown period of time so head coach Peter Laviolette had to make some adjustments to his lineup at practice.

Conor Sheary promoted to top line, Vitek Vanecek to start against Canucks

The Washington Capitals will finish off their western Canadian road trip on Friday with a visit to Vancouver against Bruce Boudreau’s Canucks. Vancouver beat the Capitals 4-2 in DC back on January 16. The Capitals are 1-0-1 after trips in Calgary and Edmonton.

The Capitals’ lines will mostly stay the same against the Canucks, but there is one notable change. According to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti, Conor Sheary will see a promotion to the top line alongside Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin. Sheary finished Wednesday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers with the trio.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby joins fourth line, Vitek Vanecek to start against former team

The Washington Capitals are playing host to the Seattle Kraken for the first time ever Saturday night. The Caps will look to build off an impressive 4-0 shutout of the Carolina Hurricanes as they wrap up their three-game homestand.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, who the team called up Friday morning, will enter the lineup on the fourth line filling in for his injured countryman Carl Hagelin.

Anthony Mantha cleared for contact for first time since shoulder surgery

The Washington Capitals are back in DC and preparing to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time since 2019. The team will look to get their first win post-bye week after dropping two in a row to the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers.

According to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir, Anthony Mantha shed his non-contact jersey and is now cleared for contact.

Mantha won’t be in the lineup against the Maple Leafs, but it’s an incredibly positive sign for the forward who has been out since early November due to shoulder surgery.

TJ Oshie and Justin Schultz take line rushes during morning skate, appear likely to return against Rangers

As a deepening crisis unfolds on the other side of the world, there will be hockey tonight. Sure feels insignificant though, right?

As for tonight’s game, the Washington Capitals will likely get both TJ Oshie and Justin Schultz back in the lineup against the New York Rangers.

How the Capitals lined up at practice without Nicklas Backstrom

The Washington Capitals were without Nicklas Backstrom at their skate on Tuesday – a day after having every player participate at practice for the first time this season. Backstrom was unavailable due to personal reasons.

The Capitals did line rushes and this is how head coach Peter Laviolette had the team line up per NBC Sports Washington’s JJ Regan.

Ilya Samsonov to get fourth straight start against Flyers, Justin Schultz out day-to-day

The Washington Capitals held their morning skate in Philadelphia hours before they’re slated to take on the Flyers for the second time this season. The team will look to win two games in a row for only the second time since the calendar flipped over into 2022.

Getting the netminding duties for his fourth straight start in a row will be Ilya Samsonov. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir also reported that Vitek Vanecek hit the ice with the team as well. Vanecek is still working back from his upper-body injury and remains on injured reserve.

Vitek Vanecek will travel with Capitals on two-game road trip, TJ Oshie still not practicing

The Washington Capitals were back at MedStar Capitals Iceplex Monday, a day after losing for the fifth time in a row on home ice. They are preparing to head out on a two-game road trip to Nashville and Philadelphia.

According to The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir, the team could get some help in the goaltending department as Vitek Vanecek will make the trip despite not practicing. Unfortunately, TJ Oshie will not.
