On Monday night, the Washington Capitals made a goal sandwich where the Caps goals were the bread and inside is a juicy meaty filling made from a billion Boston Bruins goals. Yeah, that’s a good intro. I’m not gonna rewrite that at all.
Conor Sheary scored twice in the first period, then Boston responded with SIX goals, chasing Zach Fucale and burning Vitek Vanecek right away. Under the advice of a physician, I will not not be recapping those goals here. TJ Oshie crashed the net to turn Ovechkin’s pass into a goal, but Marchand made it 7-2 on the rush. More meaningless hockey was played, growing less and less coherent until clarity arrived all at once with the final buzzer.
Caps lose.

The Washington Capitals will try to end a three-game losing streak tonight against the team that dispersed them rudely from the first round of the 2021 playoffs.
The Capitals will do so without Dmitry Orlov and own-goal scorer Carl Hagelin who both entered COVID protocol today. Zach Fucale will get his first back-to-back start in net of his career.
The game will be the Capitals’ 37th of the year and their third in four nights.

The Washington Capitals finally got off the schnide and won their first game of the preseason. The Capitals defeated the Bruins 4-3 and improved their record to 1-3-1. The Capitals’ stars buoyed them to victory.
Evgeny Kuznetsov and TJ Oshie had a goal and an assist apiece while Alex Ovechkin had two assists and Anthony Mantha scored the team’s OTGWG. Vitek Vanecek stopped 33 of 36 shots.
Connor McMichael, who got a chance to center the third line with Hendrix Lapierre out of the lineup, started the night as one of Washington’s best players.

The Washington Capitals will take on the Boston Bruins on Wednesday and play their fifth game of the preseason. The Capitals are winless thus far, going 0-3-1 in their previous four games.
Alex Ovechkin will draw back into the lineup and be joined by stars Evgeny Kuznetsov, Anthony Mantha, TJ Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and John Carlson.
Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette also chose to dress most of the remaining roster players on the bubble, including Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre who are fighting it out potentially for Nicklas Backstrom’s open center spot due to injury.
McMichael scored his first goal of the preseason against the Devils on Monday while Lapierre has five assists in three games.
The Washington Capitals lost to the visiting Boston Bruins, 3-2 in a shootout. The game marked Washington’s first game of the preseason.
Herndon native Joe Snively kicked off the scoring in the first period before Jake DeBrusk returned the favor later in the period. New Boston addition Erik Haula would deflect a shot in the front of the net to put the Bs ahead in the second, 2-1. That lead would last until Garrett Pilon backhanded a shot into the back of the net that sent the game to overtime. The Capitals eventually fell in the shootout.
Peter Laviolette’s lineup consisted of players who are mostly prospects and AHL players, but some Capitals stars played like Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, Dmitry Orlov, and Vitek Vanecek.
Connor McMichael and Hendrix Lapierre were both impressive during their first appearances in the lineup.
The Washington Capitals will take on the Boston Bruins on Sunday at 5 PM, marking their first game of the preseason.
The Capitals will dress a group that combines a small number of veteran players with mostly prospects and bubble players.
The team will be led by Tom Wilson. Other high-profile players to get a jersey will be Lars Eller, Daniel Sprong, Connor McMichael, Dmitry Orlov, Martin Fehervary, and Vitek Vanecek.
So, the season is over and it ended without much of a fight. The Caps lost 3-1 to the Bruins in Game Five and we’ll be without meaningful Caps hockey until mid-October.
This one will be fewer numbers and more thoughts and bright sides.
