Capitals marvel at Tage Thompson’s ‘elite’ ability after he scores hat trick, overtime game-winner against them

The Washington Capitals faced the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday for the first time this season — the first of three meetings they’ll have overall. In Game One, the Caps discovered what a lot of the league has already learned: That Tage Thompson guy is pretty good.

Thompson had a four-point night against the Capitals, winning the game in overtime with his hat-trick goal. Tage made the Caps look silly on the play, deking around Erik Gustafsson’s out-stretched stick and beating Darcy Kuemper to the top corner for the 5-4 victory.

It was Thompson’s third hat trick of the season, the most of any player in the NHL so far this year. Tage outdueled Alex Ovechkin, who scored twice on the night.

Alex Ovechkin and Lionel Messi had similiar, painfully long paths to dream titles. Ovi: ‘I’m really happy for him.’

Argentinian star Lionel Messi and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin have both respectively been considered one of the greatest players of all time in their sport. But both also had decade-long-plus struggles to win a top-tier championship.

Ovechkin was able to finally break through after 13 seasons with the Caps and win the Stanley Cup in June 2018. Messi was finally able to make his claim yesterday when he led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, scoring two goals and finding the back of the net in the shootout. It took Messi, 35, sixteen years to finally lift the FIFA trophy.

Alex Ovechkin has a third chance to tie or pass Gordie Howe against the Red Wings tonight. Howe’s two sons will be in attendance.

Alex Ovechkin will have another opportunity this evening to either tie or pass Gordie Howe to become the second greatest goal-scorer of all time.

Two of Howe’s children, Mark and Marty, will be in attendance at Capital One Arena to hopefully see him do it.

The Capitals will face Gordie Howe’s previous team tonight, the Detroit Red Wings. Ovechkin currently sits at 800 goals, one goal shy of tying Howe’s goal total of 801, and two tallies away from passing it. Howe spent 25 seasons in Detroit and scored 786 of his 801 goals with the team.

Ilya Samsonov is starting against the Capitals tonight for the first time in DC. Evgeny Kuznetsov: ‘I don’t have best friends before him.’

Former Capitals goaltender Ilya Samsonov is returning to Washington tonight for the first time since being non-tendered a qualifying offer and signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs over the offeseason.

While his first start should be intriguing, it’ll also be weird for some of his former teammates.

Former Capitals goaltender Ryan Zimmerman congratulates Alex Ovechkin on 800 goals: ‘You’re lucky I wasn’t in front of the net’

Washington Nationals legend Ryan Zimmerman recently took to Instagram to congratulate his friend Alex Ovechkin on reaching the 800-goal milestone.

Zimmerman, who recently retired from the MLB, spent his entire career with the Nationals, winning a World Series in 2019.

“Congrats on #800, @aleksandrovechkinofficial!!” Zimmerman said. “Been a pleasure to watch you over the years and look forward to many more 🐐”

Washington Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke rocks Capitals’ Reverse Retro jersey

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke showed his support in a national way to the Washington Capitals on Thursday.

Heinicke rocked the Capitals’ Reverse Retro 2.0 sweater and their recent giveaway Screagle hat on Colin Cowherd’s “The Herd Live.”

Heinicke, who replaced an injured Carson Wentz early in the season, has led the Commanders to a 5-1-1 over the last seven games and a possible playoff berth.

Jaromir Jagr suits up for Kladno again after it’s stricken by illness. He had two assists. He’s 50.

NHL legend Jaromir Jagr made his season debut on Sunday at age 50 (and 9 months, and 26 days). He remains as dominant as ever. Well for being nearly 51.

Jagr, owner of his hometown Kladno Knights, was faced with a difficult problem over the weekend. With his locker room plagued by illness, his Czech Extraliga team was forced to postpone their previous game and was facing another cancellation. The team is currently last in the league and only gained promotion to the league in 2021.

“When Liberec decided to not postpone the [game], we only had 12 players at [practice] on Saturday,” Jagr said per Yahoo’s Thomas Hall. “There was a threat of suspension and I didn’t want it to happen.”

So the ageless wonder decided to lace up his skates and join his team on the ice versus Liberic.

How Alexa Landestoy ended up covering the Capitals and living out her dream as a broadcaster

Alexa Landestoy has been the host of the Capitals’ pregame and postgame live show for the past three seasons. Working with former Capitals player Alan May, the duo has brought personality, interesting guests, and even deeper analysis to the shows than in years past. The pair’s unique chemistry seems built on their genuine friendship off-camera and how they rely on each other’s strengths to carry the show.

Alexa’s energy, intelligence, and mastery of hockey parlance have made the pregame and postgame shows cohesive. While she has vast media experience and star quality that others don’t naturally have, she routinely makes others shine by how she sets up their commentary or analysis with humbleness she has every reason not to have.

As an aspiring journalist myself, I always wondered how Alexa — a Californian who adored football — landed what I would consider a dream role covering the hockey team I love and doing so with exceptional results.

I recently got the chance to talk to her about the journey that brought her to Washington, her job with the Capitals, and what’s next.

Sonny Milano’s big breakout game against the Lightning

Sonny Milano had his biggest game as Capital since being called up from the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

Milano had three points, including his first two goals with the team.

Dylan Strome’s overtime goal was apparently so beautiful, the postgame practice shootout was canceled

Dylan Strome’s overtime game-winning goal ended not only the Capitals-Blue Jackets game but the Caps’ entire preseason along with it. Except — technically it wasn’t supposed to be that way.

After each preseason game, the Capitals held a three-round practice shootout with the opposing team and were scheduled to do so against Columbus. It gives an opportunity for players and goalies to practice the skills competition ahead of the season.

Not tonight.
