Wayne Gretzky finally gave Alex Ovechkin a game-used stick after winning the Stanley Cup. Ovi: ‘I was happy like a little kid’ on Christmas.

Alex Ovechkin finally received the Wayne Gretzky game-used stick he’s always coveted.

Gretzky’s gift is one of several topics that is discussed during a wide-ranging #HockeyAtHome interview between The Great 8 and The Great One hosted by NBC Sports’ Kathryn Tappen. NBCSN will broadcast the interview on Monday, April 20, at 5 PM.

Gretzky sent Ovechkin the stick in the mail and video of Ovi unwrapping the stick was captured on video.

Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky will play each other in NHL20 to raise money for coronavirus charities

The Washington Capitals announced this morning that Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky will play each other in NHL20 to raise money for the Edmonton Food Bank and MSE Foundation’s “Feeding the Frontlines.”

The best-of-three tournament will be held on Wednesday, April 22, at 8 PM and will be aired on the Capitals’ Twitch channel. Fans will be able to listen to the two NHL legends’ conversation as they play each other.

NHL announces they will air an interview with Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky soon

Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky will be upcoming guests on a #HockeyAtHome Interview Series produced by NBC. The NHL announced the news in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

According to the league, the interviews will be conducted remotely by award-winning broadcast personalities and celebrity hosts.

Wayne Gretzky thinks Alex Ovechkin has a ‘legitimate chance’ to break his goals record

Alex Ovechkin doesn’t “think it’s possible” to break Wayne Gretzky’s goal record, but The Great One himself thinks Ovi can.

Speaking to Sportsnet’s Gene Principe after Ovechkin scored his 700th goal, Gretzky expressed his happiness that the Russian machine continues to close on what was once considered an insurmountable goal total.

“I think that he has got a legitimate chance,” Gretzky said. “I think that it is great for hockey. I was teasing my kids the other day, I said the funny thing about it is, if you talk to hockey people, nobody would actually say, ‘Well, Wayne Gretzky was a good goal scorer.’ They always put me in, he’s a passer, he’s a playmaker. This is giving me a little bit of attention that I am not used to.

Gretzky added that he had been texting the Russian machine during his long goal drought after scoring his 698th goal, telling him he’d hit 700 “[b]efore you know it.”

Alex Ovechkin honored by Wayne Gretzky, parents, and son for scoring 700 goals in touching pregame ceremony

Alex Ovechkin was honored in a pregame ceremony by the Washington Capitals after scoring his 700th career goal Saturday against the Devils.

Ovechkin left the Capitals bench after an introduction video aired on the jumbotron and joined his son Sergei, his wife Nastya (who’s expecting baby number two), Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis, president Dick Patrick, and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly who were already on the ice.

By the end of the ceremony, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

Wayne Gretzky thinks Alex Ovechkin has a ‘legitimate chance’ to overtake his goals record: ‘I think it’d be wonderful for the game’

After Alex Ovechkin scored eight goals in three games last week, NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti spoke to Wayne Gretzky about how secure he believed his NHL goals record still was. Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 career games. Ovechkin is now only 202 goals away from The Great One’s record in his age 34 season.

“I’m a big believer that records are made to be broken,” Gretzky said to NHL.com. “What I accomplished, I’m very proud of. It’s hard to do what I did, and it’s really hard to do what he’s doing now. But there’s no question in my mind that he has a real legitimate chance of doing it. The two things that you need; you’ve got to stay healthy, and he’s proven that over his career. He plays hard and he stays healthy. And, secondly, you’ve got to be on a good team — and he plays on a good team.”

‘Yes I do’: Teemu Selanne believes Alex Ovechkin will break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record

Teemu Selanne knows a thing or two about scoring goals. The Finnish Flash scored the most goals as a rookie in NHL history (76) and led the league in goal scoring three different times (76, 1992-93; 52, 1997-98; and 47, 1998-99).

So when Alex Ovechkin overtook the 1997 Stanley Cup champion for 11th on the all-time goal-scoring list, Selanne was both impressed and congratulatory. He also had some advice.

Devante Smith-Pelly one of many notable athletes and celebrities to attend Game 5 of NBA Finals in Toronto

Up 3-1 over the Golden State Warriors, the Toronto Raptors were in position to wrap up their first ever NBA championship on Monday night. And the stars were out north of the border to show support to the team, including one player who knows a thing or two about clutch scoring in a decisive championship game.

Capitals forward Devante Smith-Pelly, who is an unrestricted free agent come July, attended the game and sat in the lower bowl behind one of the baskets. Smith-Pelly, a Scarborough, Ontario native, has attended several Raptors playoffs games since the Caps season ended, including some with his mother and family.

TJ Oshie was touched that his dad, who has Alzheimer’s, remembered the Caps’ Stanley Cup win the next day

The Stanley Cup was a memorable experience for every player associated with the Washington Capitals, but it may not have impacted a family more than the Oshies.

While a guest on Wayne Gretzky’s new podcast, The Great One on 1, TJ Oshie spoke about his journey to the Stanley Cup and what it meant to celebrate the win with his father on the ice in Vegas. Oshie’s father suffers from early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Living and sharing a life with someone in the family who has the disease is very difficult. But it’s the small victories that can become deeply meaningful.
