Evgeny Kuznetsov jokes that Wayne Gretzky will pay Alex Ovechkin’s opponents so all-time goals record is not broken

Alex Ovechkin scored his ninth goal of the 2022-23 season on Thursday, giving him 789 career goals. That leaves The Great Eight just 106 goals from overtaking Wayne Gretzky for the all-time lead.

Evgeny Kuznetsov has ridden shotgun with Ovi for a lot of those goals over the past five or so seasons. Kuzy sat down with former Caps forward Andrei Nikolishin, during a “Slippery Ice” interview, to talk about Ovechkin’s chase of Gretzky.

Alex Semin wants to travel with Capitals once Alex Ovechkin gets close to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has eight goals so far in the 2022-23 season to give him 788 in his career. That total leaves him just 107 tallies shy of overtaking Wayne Gretzky for first all-time in NHL history.

With Ovi closing in on the big record and breaking plenty of other records along the way, figures both past and present in his career have been getting asked about The Great Eight’s chase.

Ovi’s good buddy and former Caps winger Alex Semin is the latest to comment as he sat down with Pavel Lysenkov from the Russian outlet Match TV.

Wayne Gretzky thinks it’s ‘when not if’ Alex Ovechkin breaks his goals record, wants to travel with Capitals when he’s close

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin started his 2022-23 season with 780 career goals. That total leaves him just 115 tallies shy of overtaking Wayne Gretzky for first all-time in NHL history.

Before the Caps’ Home Opener against the Boston Bruins, team owner Ted Leonsis gave an interview on NBC Sports Washington about Ovi’s chase of the record.

Ted said that not only does Gretzky welcome the challenge but he also wants to travel to games with the Capitals whenever The Great Eight gets close to taking down his once-thought-to-be untouchable 894 career goal total.

Andrew Brunette described Alex Ovechkin as ‘the second greatest goal scorer of all-time’ behind Wayne Gretzky pregame

Andrew Brunette was asked about Alex Ovechkin before the Capitals-Panthers game on Friday. By all intents and purposes, the Panthers head coach and former Capital praised The Great 8 in his answer.

But it’s a tiny thing he said about Ovi that is getting a lot of attention online. Brunette referred to Ovechkin as the second greatest goal scorer of all-time behind Wayne Gretzky.

Alex Ovechkin passes Wayne Gretzky for most multi-goal road games in NHL history

The Washington Capitals played an absolute barnburner against the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. The final score more resembled the first quarter of a football game than a hockey game. Of course, the potential greatest goal scorer of all time had to get involved.

Alex Ovechkin scored twice, recording his 84th career multi-goal road game. According to NBC Sports Washington, Ovechkin now has the most multi-goal road games in NHL history, passing… Wayne Gretzky.

Wayne Gretzky starts off TNT media event by saying he hopes Alex Ovechkin breaks his goals record

Wayne Gretzky scored 894 goals in his unmatched Hall of Fame career. That record, which was once thought to be untouchable, will now be challenged by Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals captain signed a five-year contract extension over the offseason, and enters the 2021-22 season trailing The Great One by only 164 goals.

Wednesday, Gretzky, who was hired by Turner Sports as a TV analyst, started off a TNT media event by commenting on the Capitals’ season-opening game against the New York Rangers, which will be aired on TNT on Wednesday, October 13.

“You get to see Alex (Ovechkin) try to chase down my record, which I hope he breaks,” Gretzky said.

Wayne Gretzky signs multi-year deal to become Turner Sports’ lead NHL studio analyst

Despite Connor McDavid scoring over 100 points in the pandemic-shortened season, the Edmonton Oilers were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Winnipeg Jets.

The NHL illustrated how Alex Ovechkin has closed in on Wayne Gretzky in the all-time goals race

Alex Ovechkin moved past Phil Esposito on Tuesday to become the sixth greatest goal-scorer in NHL history. Ovechkin’s 718th goal put him 176 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s all-time mark of 894.

On Thursday, the NHL showed how Ovechkin stacked up to Gretzky with a dynamic line graph which compared the two greats’ goal-scoring per season by age.
