Carl Hagelin and Nic Dowd will both miss tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Both remain out with upper-body injuries.
Ilya Samsonov gave up four goals on 39 shots during the Capitals’ 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Friday.
Saturday morning, the Caps’ backup netminder was sent down to Hershey, but not for the reason you might think.

Richard Panik will draw back into the Capitals lineup Monday against the Arizona Coyotes. Before signing a four-year contract with the Capitals in July, Panik played two seasons with the Coyotes. He had 33 points in 75 games last year.
“I’m really excited,” Panik said after practice. “It’s been a long road but finally I’m 100 percent. I’m excited to jump on the running train.”
Panik, out injured since October 15 with an upper-body injury, began skating without a no-contact injury last Tuesday. To make room for Panik back on the roster, the Capitals optioned Travis Boyd and Tyler Lewington, who was put on waivers Sunday, down to the Hershey Bears.
The Washington Capitals have not played since Sunday and since then, the team has gotten healthier.
Richard Panik, who’s on longterm injured reserve due to an upper-body injury that he suffered on October 16, returned to the ice Tuesday for practice and shed his no-contact jersey. Meanwhile, Nic Dowd is nearing a return after suffering a lower-body injury against the Leafs on October 29.
The Washington Capitals went from being nearly completely healthy to needing to make two call-ups after one boneheaded play against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jonas Siegenthaler and Richard Panik both suffered upper-body injuries on Wednesday after the two players crashed into each other off a faceoff. Both players left the game during the third period and went down the tunnel immediately. The Capitals announced Friday that Panik has been placed on long-term injured reserve while Siegenthaler will be a game-time decision.
In response to those injuries, the Capitals recalled Hershey Bears skaters Martin Fehervary and Travis Boyd to Washington. It’s unclear if one or both will play against the New York Rangers tonight.
The Washington Capitals unceremoniously dumped Travis Boyd to the Hershey Bears last week. After signing two new players for the fourth line over the summer, the Capitals no longer had room on the active roster for Minnesota native who spent the entire season in the NHL last year.
So how did Boyd respond to the demotion?
After scoring four goals and tallying six points in two games, Boyd was named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 13, 2019.
A week ago, the Washington Capitals placed Travis Boyd on waivers and loaned him to the Hershey Bears after Evgeny Kuznetsov returned from suspension.
Sunday, Boyd played his first game of the season with the Bears and he was dominant.
Boyd tallied three points — two goals and an assist — including the overtime game-winner in Hershey’s 4-3 victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

It might be the middle of July, but hockey’s back for many NHL players with Minnesota roots.
Wednesday night, the fourth year of Da Beauty League will begin with three games at Braemar Arena in Edina, Minnesota.
Three Capitals players will be participating in the league this year.
Travis Boyd‘s rookie season had a slow and worrying start, but the progress he made is encouraging for 2019-20.

Women’s hockey has been in a brighter spotlight in recent weeks with the inclusion of professional women’s players in the NHL’s All-Star weekend in San Jose, CA and the NWHL’s All-Star weekend in Nashville, TN. But women’s hockey has been thriving and growing in the USA at an impressive rate for a long time.
USA Hockey’s public registration numbers show a nearly five percent increase in women’s hockey in 2017-18, compared to only one percent increase in men’s. Men’s hockey still has larger numbers overall, but the difference in the rate of growth reflects a change in the broader nature of hockey in the USA.
We spoke with some Washington Capitals players about the importance of women’s hockey during the team’s “Hockey ‘n Heels” event.
