77 photos from the Caps Dog Calendar shoot featuring puppies, the Stanley Cup, and puppies IN the Stanley Cup

The happiest day of the Capitals regular season happened on Saturday when they participated in the annual canine calendar photoshoot. Partnering with Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, the guys posed with dogs up for adoption, as well as their own family-owned pups.

This year’s shoot was more relaxed, with each Caps player sporting their own style with a special guest: the STANLEY CUP! And what’s better than tiny puppies in the Cup? Not much.

Capitals players John Carlson, Brett Connolly, Nic Dowd, Lars Eller, TJ Oshie, Alex Ovechkin, Matt Niskanen, and Chandler Stephenson all posed with their own dogs. Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, Andre Burakovsky, Pheonix Copley, Christian Djoos, Braden Holtby, Dmitrij Jaskin, Michal Kempny, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Devante Smith-Pelly, Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker, and Tom Wilson took their photos with dogs available for adoption through Homeward Trails.

Since the calendar began in 2014, the Caps have raised almost $250,000 for Homeward Trails. A limited number of calendars will be available for $20 at the November 21 game against the Chicago Blackhawks. The calendar will be sold online and details will be announced at a later date.

While the official photos won’t be seen until the release, we hope these adorable photos will hold you over until then.

Jonas Siegenthaler assigned to Hershey and other roster juggling moves

The Capitals moved more pieces around to deal with the injury bug that hit the team late in the preseason. Most notably, the team sent down Jonas Siegenthaler to the Hershey Bears for the start of the season. Siegenthaler impressed during the preseason and was potentially going to be the extra defenseman, but fell victim to a looming Tom Wilson suspension and subsequent roster juggling.

Travis Boyd is wearing a protective boot on his left foot after blocking a shot in the preseason

On Saturday night, a few of the Capitals attended a DC United game, and after the game, Andre Burakovsky got to meet his hero, Wayne Rooney.

In the photo posted by Burakovsky from inside the DC United locker room, Travis Boyd’s left foot can be seen encased in a protective boot.

Travis Boyd is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, Michal Kempny day-to-day

Caps senior writer Mike Vogel has announced via Twitter that forward Travis Boyd suffered a lower-body injury during Tuesday’s preseason game against the Blues. Boyd’s status is week-to-week.

Boyd’s injury effectively ends the battle for fourth line center, with summer acquisition Nic Dowd likely winning the spot.

TJ Oshie, Travis Boyd, and Shane Gersich take photo together with Stanley Cup (Photo)

To conclude his day with the Stanley Cup, TJ Oshie held a private party in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Oshie invited former teammate Taylor Chorney to the shindig. He also invited Caps rookies Travis Boyd and Shane Gersich.

And all three of the Capitals teammates took a photo together with the Stanley Cup before the night was through.

Shane Gersich does Cup stand with an assist from TJ Oshie

After spending the first part of his day in Warroad, TJ Oshie flew to Minneapolis and concluded his Stanley Cup day with a private party.

He invited two Caps rookies for the celebration: Shane Gersich and Travis Boyd.

Gersich became the latest Capital to do a Cup stand.

Breaking down the Capitals wild celebration at the bench after beating the Penguins

Coming into Monday night’s game, the Washington Capitals had lost nine out of 10 series against the Pittsburgh Penguins and had never gotten past the second round of the playoffs during the Alex Ovechkin Era. Despite winning the Presidents’ Trophy in three of the last nine seasons and division titles in eight of the last 11, Capitals fans would label the year a failure when the team choked in the playoffs.

Evgeny Kuznetsov’s beautiful, clutch, exhilarating, perfect, overtime game-winning goal changed all of that. And the Caps bench erupted in one of the most raucous team celebrations you’ll ever see.

Capitals recall Travis Boyd and Madison Bowey from Hershey

Tuesday evening, the Washington Capitals announced the promotions of Travis Boyd and Madison Bowey from the AHL Hershey Bears. The two players have both spent time in Washington this season and will likely finish the year on the Caps roster for the the team’s playoff run.

With Jay Beagle injured, Boyd could fill-in as the team’s fourth line center during the team’s final two regular season games. Meanwhile, Bowey could help spell several veteran defensemen and give them a rest before the playoffs. Bowey will be the team’s eighth defenseman on the roster.

Alex Ovechkin ties Jari Kurri in career goals on Travis Boyd’s first NHL point

With Evgeny Kuznetsov ailing, rookie Travis Boyd received a huge opportunity to center the first line of Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson. The move paid off.

A fantastic individual play by the longtime Hershey Bear led to the Capitals first goal of the game. Alex Ovechkin scored the goal. It was Ovechkin’s 43rd of the season and 601st of his career. The Russian machine is now tied with Jari Kurri for 19th all time in goals.

The assist was Boyd’s first career NHL point.
