The Washington Capitals were given the day off on Friday, but the Kettler ice sheet remained busy. The visiting Buffalo Sabres, whom the Caps will play Saturday Night at Capital One Arena, practiced at 12:30pm.

As part of Hockey is for Everyone Month, the Washington Capitals hosted Fatima Al Ali and the United Arab Emirates Women’s National Hockey Team at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Thursday. They got to watch the team practice in the morning before putting on their skates and holding their own practice on the Capitals rink. Madison Bowey, Chandler Stephenson, and Capitals legend Peter Bondra all joined the team and their coach on the ice for drills and mini scrimmages.
The girls were ecstatic to be at an NHL rink and were in awe of the players they watch on screen in real life. As fans, they got to take selfies with players through the glass. As professional athletes, they were surrounded by reporters from local media.

Washington Capitals fans enjoyed a girls’ night out at Hockey ‘n Heels at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, Tuesday evening. The Scarlet Caps hosted their annual night of on-ice sessions with Capital players and alumni as well as off-ice talks with coaches, nutrition guides, and broadcast talent.

The Washington Capitals held breakdown day at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Friday. At the end of a team-identified two-year Stanley Cup window, the players wore the disappointment on their faces with how things ended this season. During their final interviews with the press, the Caps gave their theories on what went wrong and, for some, spoke about their uncertain futures with the team. Others revealed painful injuries they played through in the postseason.

The Washington Capitals opened their second round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins Thursday night. The red glow returned to Verizon Center with the glow-stick giveaway, but the big addition to the pregame festivities is the light show on the ice. For most arenas, this is nothing new but for Verizon Center it’s a first. It definitely adds another element to the light show that proceeds the teams taking the ice. No better way to introduce it than Game One of Round 2 to get all the fans on their feet.

Playoff hockey was back in DC Thursday when the Washington Capitals hosted Game One of their first-round series with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Caps fans filled Verizon Center with their red glow sticks as the teams took the ice. It was a slow start for the Caps, falling to a two-nothing deficit early. The fans were falling out of the hype until Justin Williams put two away by the end of the second period. When the game clock went down to overtime, fans started to get antsy for the first full overtime period of the postseason.
They didn’t have to wait long as Tom Wilson got one past Frederik Andersen and the place erupted. Seeing the team jump into the glass the fans hold up is the best part of playoff hockey. Everything means so much more, and the team shares every moment with the city that supports it.

I was in Detroit, Michigan over the weekend to work with Dan Mannes, multimedia producer for the Detroit Red Wings. Dan had me on photo duty for the night. My job was to send off shots in between periods for the team to use on social media. I knew it would be great experience in quick photo turnaround, especially for an NHL game.
I did not know I’d be involved in an unlikely incident.

The Washington Capitals hosted the Nashville Predators in a St. Patrick’s Day themed game at Verizon Center on Thursday. Unfortunately the game did not go the Caps’ way, but their pregame warm-up jerseys got the fans into the shamrock spirit.
The plaid-shouldered sweaters were very similar to the previous year’s, but this time the numbers had more of a Celtic style and were outlined rather than filled. The worn jerseys were auctioned off by the end of the second intermission, with all proceeds going to Anacostia Watershed Society.
