Caps vs Wild pregame: Wild western matchup

The Washington Capitals will take a break from all the Eastern Conference action of late for their final game of the season against the Western Conference until a potential Stanley Cup Final. That western team is the Minnesota Wild who the Caps last saw and beat 5-2 on the road in mid November.

Back on track: numbers for the morning after

After a not so great end to their homestand, the Washington Capitals headed west for their only visit to the Minnesota Wild’s barn this season. The Caps and a returning from suspension Tom Wilson got the job done, smashing the Wild 5-2.

The Capitals out-shot the Wild 33 to 28, but were narrowly out-attempted at five-on-five 42 to 39.

Wilson returns: Caps beat Wild 5-2!

After ten days at home, the Washington Capitals have hit the road, kicking off their middle-America trip with a win over Bruce Boudreau, Eric Fehr, and the Minnesota Wild.

As befitting the game in which Tom Wilson returned from suspension, a lot of raucous stuff happened in this one. Dmitry Orlov opened up scoring for Washington, taking a nifty pass from Lars Eller to beat Devan Dubynuk. The dude Tom himself followed up, converting an Orlov pass for a crash-the-net (maybe too crash-y?) goal.

In the second period, precocious young child Andre Burakovsky backhanded another neat pass from Lars Eller to make it 3-0, but Mikko Koivu exploited a bad clear from Michal Kempny to crack Pheonix Copley’s shutout bid.

Dmitry Orlov capped off a gorgeous three-on-two rush with Wilson and Ovechkin to restore the three-goal lead. A few minutes later, Nicky Backstrom faked a shot to set up TJ Oshie for another lovely rush goal. Matt Dumba (or was it Zach Parise?) scored a power-play goal from point blank in the third period, but that was that.

Caps win 5-2!

Caps at Wild pregame: Wild Willy

The Caps have hit the road again for the next four games. To start, they will face a pretty stellar looking Minnesota Wild. The Minnesota team is returning home after a successful road trip while the Capitals are still trying to find a good groove and shake off their Stanley Cup hangover. Luckily, some additions to the Capitals lineup might make a bit of a positive impact. Most notably in the lineup this evening is an addition to the top line. Tom Wilson. Yeah, you read that right.

First line dominance: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals traveled to the land of 10,000 lakes to play the Western Conference’s Minnesota Wild in the second game of the Caps four game road trip. The good guys would prevail 5-2 over the Wild, majorly on the back of a stellar night from their first line forwards.

The Wild out-shot the Caps 34 to 27 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 46 to 39.

The Wild? More like the mild: Caps win 5-2

The Caps and their dads visited Minnesota for a Thursday night tilt against the Wild.

The first period ended with no scoring. About a minute into the second, Tom “Laser Tom” Wilson put the Caps up 1-0. About six minutes into the period, Alex Ovechkin buried a nice feed from Andre Burakovsky to give the Caps a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Burakovsky went end-to-end to put the Caps up 3-0. But less than two minutes later Nino Niederreiter got about 78 whacks at the puck and put it home while Dmitry Orlov did nothing that looked like defense. Nick Backstrom put the game out of reach without five minutes to go. Eric Staal scored a late power play goal, but then Tom Wilson added an empty netter.

Caps win 5-2!

Caps at Wild pregame: The mild, Wild west

The Washington Capitals will take just a small jog down south from Manitoba to take on another Western Conference foe in the Minnesota Wild. This isn’t the same Wild team that was winning twelve games in a row last year, but Bruce Boudreau still has his bunch firmly in the playoff picture.

Minnesota Wild fans went insane at Xcel Center celebrating Vikings last second win

Sunday night, the Minnesota Wild played the Vancouver Canucks the same time the Vikings played the Saints in an NFL playoff game.

For Wild fans, the Vikings game was hard to peel away from. After taking an early 17-point lead, the Vikings imploded in the second half. Kicker Wil Lutz gave the Saints a 24-23 lead after connecting on a 43-yard field goal with only 25 seconds left. The Vikings would get the ball back and on the team’s final play, Case Keenum found UMD alumnus Stefon Diggs along the sideline for an unlikely 61-yard touchdown.

Capitals bounce back from bad road trip: numbers for the morning after

The Caps were in dire need of a solid, convincing victory after failing to do so for over a week. They got just that against the Minnesota Wild in a 3-1 win at Capital One Arena.

The Capitals out-shot the Wild 43 to 31 and out-attempted them five-on-five 47 to 37.

Bounce back: Caps beat Wild 3-1

The Caps badly needed a good win and would have to get one facing a hot Minnesota Wild team on a four-game winning streak. Old friend Bruce Boudreau was back in town. Would Bruce and the team with the best logo in the NHL throw the Caps a bone?

Thomas Jehoshaphat Oshie scored his tenth goal of the season on the powerplay to give the Caps a rare early lead. Said lead was quickly erased by Nino Niederreiter on the Wild’s own power play. The lead was restored by Dmitry Orlov after he slammed home a point drive.

Nada in the second.

Alex Stalock stopped a Chandler Stephenson penalty shot. Evgeny Kuznetsov struck on a clutch, late double minor power play drawn by Lars Eller.

Caps beat Wild 3-1!
