In Thursday night’s win against the Philadelphia Flyers, Ilya Samsonov celebrated an offensive milestone.
In the final 30 seconds of the game, Samsonov recorded his first NHL point – a primary assist. With the Capitals hanging onto a 4-3 lead against the Flyers, Samsonov tapped the puck to Nic Dowd who scored an empty-net goal from 185 feet away in the Capitals’ defensive zone.

Nic Dowd sealed the Capitals’ 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, taking a pot shot at the Flyers’ empty net with 28 seconds left remaining in the game. At first, Dowd’s decision seemed ridiculous and perhaps unwise. Dowd launched a wrist shot from behind both Ilya Samsonov and the Capitals net, 185 feet away from the Flyers’ goal.
Dowd’s shot was perfect though and it went in. According to the checking-line center, this was all according to Peter Laviolette’s plan.

The Washington Capitals are hot, hot, hot. The boys from DC went into Philadelphia and put down the Flyers 5-3 to take home their seventh victory in their last eight tries.
The Flyers outshot the Caps 33 to 22 and out-attempted them at five-on-five 40 to 24.

Lars Eller missed Thursday’s game due to a family issue, so the Washington Capitals were forced to go with eleven forwards and seven defenders against the Philadelphia Flyers. Washington’s seventh D was 23-year-old Swiss Thai sweetheart, Jonas Siegenthaler.
So here’s Siegenthaler’s stat line for the night: 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 shots, 0 blocks, 0 hits. In his defense, he didn’t even touch the ice until the game’s final minute.

The Washington Capitals headed north to face off against the Flyers for the third time this season and golly gee whizz what a win. I was way too stressed out.
A good chunk of scoring kicked off in the first period with a gorgeous slapshot from Alex Ovechkin. The Flyers quickly responded, but Connor Sheary answered back to bring the score to 2-1 heading into the second period.
John Carlson, welcome to the 500 points club. Carlson scored a fabulous goal with 13:02 left in the second period to increase the Caps lead, but Nic Dowd would score one more to bring the Caps up 4-1. Some broken glass along the boards caused a bit of a delay, but the Caps held on for the final bit left in the period.
Can’t lie, I was nervous for the third after the whole collapsing thing from the last game. After the Flyers got a quick goal with 18:17 left in the third period, I was even more nervous. What happened next? You guessed it, another Flyers goal! A Nic Dowd empty netter would bring our stress levels down.

Alex Ovechkin was the benefactor of an XL pizza with extra cheese in the first period of the Capitals-Flyers game.
For those who don’t know:
pizza [ peet-suh ] – noun – a delicious Italian dish and in hockey, a bad turnover up the middle of the ice.
Flyers goaltender Brian Elliott looked to clear the puck up the boards to a teammate. Instead, his pass missed the target and the puck bounced out to the slot to one of the greatest scorers in NHL history.

Tom Wilson missed his third straight game on Thursday after being suspended for seven games by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. But that doesn’t mean his presence wasn’t felt on the ice.
During warmups, TJ Oshie continued the pair’s NHL-best pregame ritual even though Wilson, with his mauled paw, was watching from home.

After a quick little stop at home, the Washington Capitals have hit the road again! They’re back in Philadelphia, for the next few days, to face off against the Flyers for the third time this season. The fourth time will be on Saturday. I am begging for the Capitals to hold on to a lead. Just this once, for my own sake.
